Ej20 identification?
Hi,
I have an eJ20 that I bought a number of years ago. I was told at the time it was an RA engine, however, are there any identifying numbers for me to be able to confirm this? I can see the ej20 casting, I can also see what looks like Y215 cast into the left engine casing, to the left of the EJ20 cast ID.
Can anyone help?
thanks,
andy.

Thanks for that. I don’t suppose anyone has any pictures, on links to pictures that show the hash markings in reference to whether it is a forged lump. I don’t really want to split it if I don’t have to.
cheers,
Andy.

Well I’ve had a look and there are no hash markings behind the crank sensor, so it isn’t a forged engine. A quick question, and apologies for my ignorance, but the closed deck and semi-closed deck blocks, were these only used in the factory forged engines or were they used in non-forged engines? The reason I’m asking is a mate of mine had a 2005 ej20 legacy 2.0 GT JDM with a knackered bottom end. I have this EJ20 engine sat in my workshop as I had planned on putting it in my Impreza when I build it, although it would be stripped and rebuilt, but I want at least a semi closed deck block as I intend to do a higher powered build (400bhp or so). So I was going to pull this one apart to see if it was a worth while starting point, if not then I’ll look for a different block. But, not that legacy is available cheap and I have this engine doing nothing, I was thinking of putting it in and selling the car on.
However, I don’t want to do this ignorant it’s likely to be semi-closed, or better, but I want to figure this out without pulling it apart! 😆
I know I might be asking the impossible, but Ian it possible to figure out?
Cheers,
Andy.

RA doesnt mean it is or isnt forged and RA doesnt mean it is or isnt CDB
AFAIK there is absolutely zero ways to tell if its a forged internals inside any block from factory. The hash markings you guys are discussing are to identify whether the block is closed deck or not and even then you wont absolutely know for sure til its splt..

Ah right, fair enough. I guess that if the legacy comes up cheap enough i’ll just have to pull the heads off and see which type of engine I’ve got spare. It would have been helpful of Subaru to actually give us engine numbers or casting numbers to I.D open, semi and closed deck blocks, or is that asking too much? 😆
Cheers for the help though guys, it is appreciated.
