Question

Can someone quickly summarise what the costs of importing a vehicle from Europe are, e.g. UK VAT, Excise Tax, Registration etc?

Alternatively if someone has a web link to somewhere with the info that would be appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Nick

Vat is 17.5% of purchase price (purchase price = price you paid converted to pounds using the exchange rate on the day you imported it)

UK Registration fee - that's about 150 quid I seem to remember

Tax = VED 165 quid per year

Then there's the cost of picking it up = flight, ferry

For a Euro scoob you'll need an alarm 300 quid and locking wheel nuts 20 quid.

From Belgium there's a Belgian registration fee plus insurance - about 200 quid I seem to remember.

UK first registration fee = 25 quid. The bloke who charged you 150 must have been laughing - did you pay cash?

So, add VAT, add road fund license (or VED, or whatever it's called), add 25 quid. Then you need alarm (if not already fitted), and extended warranty if you can find one worth the paper it's written on.

If you have located the car at the right price then some import companies will do the rest for you for a reasonable fee.

Euro cars come with a minimum 2 year warranty, Belgian (and possibly others) with 3 years.

Don't forget number plates @ £20.

Also your friendly local Subaru importer charges £490 for delivery to dealer, which is more than the cost of getting the car flatbedded from Europe to your door!!

keyring cars have a breakdown of costs.

In this order

Import from Alain knockaert he will deliver to Oostend for around £60 so no insurance/registration or transit plates required on Belgium side.

Return hover dover-oostend approx. £125 (passenger out, car return)

Arrive in UK, fill with tank of optimax £40, drive straight home (no transit plates required)

Register with DVLC - £25, get Road Tax - £160?, and plates £20

Fit CAT1 alarm + tracker min £500

Once letter received from Inland Revenue (takes them about a month to process and find you ) send off payment for VAT
(the IR are given your details by DVLC, you don't need to do anything for this other than pay when requested)

And that is the full list of everything.

Edited to say That all Belgium and Dutch cars now come with a full 3 year warranty. FACT - Take a look at their website.

Wink

Chiark - it was 25 quid. It was a while ago when I did it and I forgot.

Boultsy. I think its Customs and Excise that want the VAT not the IR :-)

I've seen a second hand car in Germany... need to move on this or I'll miss it. Does anyone know what I need to do when I buy it over there (private sale not through dealer)

Houblt, contact your local DVLA office and they will be able to send you an import pack, which should cover new and used cars. Not sure about what you have to do on the other side of the water, the DVLA may be able to give advice on this also. If not ask them who you should contact, DVLA headquaters perhaps.

Nigel - I knew it was one of those *******s
