New style number plates now on sale from the DVLA for use from 1st September this year:

2 letters followed by 51 followed by three letters - e.g. YO51SUB - will set you back £799! They're having a laugh, right?

Cool

The 51 indicates which half of the 'year' the car was sold in.

Angry

Don't forget that it will be illegal to show the national flag, but not illegal to show the EU symbol on number plates. Apparently the government also plan to get the Police to crack down on illegal spacing and designs on number plates. Glad to see they are concentrating on the important things.

And while I'm having a rant, they couldn't have picked a more obscure or stupid system for the new number plates. Nothing seems to make any sense to me. And to think the idiots that dream up these ideas actually get paid for it...
