Default 2pot conversion issues

so my mechanic tried to fit my rear discs and 2pot calipers for my gc8.
Badically he said with new discs on wheel the studs were not long enough and he was not happy fitting then.
I have a 97 sti and fitted new age wrx discs

pics attached

thoughts?

Discs are not sitting far enough onto the hub but it could be a number of things you need to explain exactly what you've done cause they look like newage hubs.

Got me thinking...……..in the pic I am sure he has not bent back the dust cover - could this be why the disc will not travel further back?

Yes that would stop it but I fear there's possibly more to this than meets the eye. If its a v3 import why has it ABS rings for starters. Has it DCCD or do you know whether it has an r160 or a r180 diff. It will need the back plates modified or removed as well.

Isn't the rear brake disc/hand brake size different from classic to newage?

Christ what you mean? I think my car does have abs, sure there is an ABS module in the engine bay. No DCCD on this car.
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this

Hi
it will fit on , but you need to remove the guard around the hub , it's only spot welded on , so either drill out or grind off the welds, the discs will fit straight on all the way then.
You need 2001 onwards WRX 290mm discs with the 170mm handbrake.
Hope this helps
Cheers Ian

Pic of chassis plate or model number would be a good place to start. Did it have single pot rears if so Alyn at AS performance will be able to help you out but the v3 with DCCD is a nightmare. Model number should be something like this GC8D4ED

Ian, thank you sir for all your info. I spoke to you many times on the phone about the upgrade and you provided great knowledge. I promise when I buy my new front disks in next short while it will be from you lol

I bought the rear disks from euro car parts, Brembo disks from an early newage car - here are disk specs - should this fit?

That add/web page you provided is misleading they are not brembo discs they are 290mm. Brembos are 316mm iirc on the rear. if you cut/ grind/ hammer and chisel the spot welds off then they should fit. The 4 in your model number is the number of doors but the r180 and DCCD came in the ra's as well which is also a 4 door.

I ordered the Brembo version of those disks. There were many options. Ok cool I will try and bend back the brake dust shields and try again! Thank you all

If your mechanic didn't realise the disc was sitting against the guard then I think you need a new mechanic.

You don't bend back anything, just grab a grinder and grind off the few spot welds and the whole thing will come off.

It does sound like the dust shield hasn't been removed and is in the way. It HAS to be removed to be able to slide the new discs on fully. I did this to my V3 STi a few weeks ago and the disc slid right on after drilling the dust shield off

Here are the seven spot welds partially drilled out on my old dust shield prior to removing it, hope that helps.

All sorted gents!
Yes the dust shields were NOT bent back. Once I did that job was fairly simply. I had to spin the handbrake shoe thingy as one of the discs did not want to go on.

I did try to bleed the brakes (only back two) but was not seeing a lot of fluid come out.

In any case took car out and it stops, will get my mechanic to bleed full system when he fits the braided hose lines.

Thanks all

In that picture it shows you already have braided hoses fitted?
There is a sequence to follow for bleeding correctly.

This is my next mod well over due, bought some rear calipers off Matty but they arrived split in half, so i ended up not fitting them straight away as read that if the calipers are spilt will need new seals as they never seal the same again after. Just bought another set of a low mile Newage model, need to respray them blue.

You should fit new stainless steel pistons and seals/dust boots whilst you have them apart and off the car. Not difficult to do.

I just wanted to make sure the disks fitted. Next time wheels are off I will properly remove the dust shields. And I didn’t have a decent grinder/ drill to hand.

I bought the calipers fully refurbished and pressure tested from “big red” on eBay. Came with a couple of years warranty.

£230 and sold my previous ones (which needed work) for £100.

Yes my kechanic fitted the first braided line line then ran out of time......

i need to ffit the other three to the car at first opportunity.

Never ending lads!!!!

Car sits in a heated garage and only comes out in winter so can't see them rusting up any time soon. Discs are still spotless on the front.
