Default Whining noise under acceleration

As you may of gathered by the amount of posts I've started I've recently picked up a fresh import 2005 face-lift forester STi.

Ive had the car a few weeks now so assume its been sat for a while and on the test drive it was fine and now it's in use everyday any possible issues will be coming to light which I guess is to be expected.

I've started to get a whine coming from what seems to be the top right of the engine. The noises is very prominent when cold and increases in tempo when the accelorter pedal is pressed. It quietens down after about 5 to 10 minutes when the car is getting up to temperature however it is still there if you listen out for it but it is at this point only a subtle noise. It doesn't change if the steering wheel is moved its more related to the pedal as mentioned

I have taken a couple of video clips in the hope it may give you an indication of what it might be I've spoken with the importers and they've asked me to get it to a garage as get it diagnosed so I've reached out to a couple who are local ish to me but the issue is by the time I've driven the half hour to them the noise would have quietened up. So any suggestions?

Thanks

that could be the little tensioner pulley for the belts at the front , mine was making the same noise , if it is it’s a cheap easy fix , best way of testing it is take a belt off and see if noise is still there , if it is that and it fails it can take the cam belt out and therefore ruin your engine , where are you based area wise

i thought my alternator was the issue until i found this was the problem , the pulley is at the front of the engine it’s on an adjustable set up and is more or less in the middle of the cam belt covers , the noise it’s making if it’s that i would not drive it , i have a used spare but they are a very cheap part , if i am correct on it being that , easy way to check if it’s that as per above

Cheers for the help guys, yes I'm based in Bracknell Berkshire, the cambelt was replaced when it was imported so would of hoped the tensioners or any related belts were changed.

So train of thought is its the power steering pump belt or tensioner

if it’s the pump then it would change when you steer moving or not plus get worse at speed , the pulley fault sounds like it’s coming from alternator or ac unit it gets quieter as it warms up worse when you first start the car , i’m happy to be proved wrong but my money is on that as it’s a dead ringer for what i had on my fsti , if it fails as above it can be a major issue but it’s essy to repair

Hi Stevie,

That looks like Jennets park or whatever it's called?

Mine makes a noise like that (I've got a FSTi too), I changed the O-Ring on the power steering pump and that helped. Can be got from for a few quid and easy to change, I'm in Bracknell quite often so could meet up?

Hi mate

Yes fella that's the area. Did it fix the problem? Or is it still there as I'd rather not delay the inevitable and just get it fixed as if its on its way out I don't want it failing mid bend with the little lad in the car

Power steering pump bud, my hatch is doing the same and only started doing it coming into the colder weather. Seen a post on FB regarding a lot of Impreza Hatch backs in the States with the same issue

Been over to one of the subaru tuners this morning and they've confirmed it the dreaded bearing wear/pump failure.

We don't have our own body shop but use prince brothers up the road from us, been using them for years.
They sprayed the front end of my old Hawk and I was happy with it.
Might be worth popping in to them and getting a quote.
