Brake upgrade?
Good evening all,
I am looking to upgrade my front brakes from the brembos that have made a home on my type R.
I like the look of KSport (8pots) 330mm
However, for about a grand are there other options I should be considering please?
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks, Rob

Thanks for the reply. I had not even thought about that!!
DS2500 pads, I know that much. I didn't realise there were different discs for the KSports other than floating or not?

I have K sport with DS2500 (I think) pads I cannot fault the brakes until you need spares. My day car is a Renault Scenic with electric handbrake that auto releases. I guess with 400 bhp on occasions I have forgotten to take the handbrake off so the bells are worn and I cannot get any replies over the cost of replacements. May have to look at alternatives.

Thank you, I have been getting good feedback.
Apparently Alyn at AS Performance can get parts - from what I am reading in the forums.

I have the Godspeed Kit on my Legacy. They are Renault Megane/Clio RS blocks with adaptors that allow the bells and discs to fit under standard WRX 17's without spacers.
There are deals to be had if you speak with Ian

brembos with good discs and pads works very well , the issue you sometimes get regards brembos is the size of the brake servo , that makes a lot of difference having the larger one it's like night and day , my 04 fsti has the smaller one, brakes are ok but a better pad is needed on the next pad change as ebc reds are not a sharp , my new shape fsti .. blow on the peddle and you slow down and that's on cheap pagid pads that clearly work very well , track day i would use the ebc reds though

I've been there and done it with big brakes, and eventually regretted it.
The only thing they will give you over a well specced set of Brembos is better cooling and therefore better repeatability of braking effect on track. On the road in every day use they may even be worse than Brembos.
If it's a track oriented car bigger brakes will work for you. But for a regular road car if you current brake set up can lock the wheels on full application you don't really need any more braking effort, and bigger brakes will perhaps feel more wooden when cold.
Be careful what you wish for, you might get it.

The MLR forum members recommend Carbotech XP8 pads (fast road) or XP10 (track) over any EBC or Ferodo pads. No stupid replies please for mentioning them!
Replacement bells and rotors are available from this site -

Hi
What use does the car get , how hard do you drive it , and will you be doing track days.
There isn't a one kit fit's all , so people can give you advise on what they use , but then there driving style might be miles away from yours so your needs will be different.
K sports will be a good starting point , cheap kits , but are no way made as well as AP or Brembo's , and as said above , getting spares for them is a nightmare !
What version Type R do you have , and what's fitted to the rears ?
We can offer you various options if you let me know your intended use
Cheers Ian

Thank you everyone for your replies and sorry for the delay, been busy trying to get the thing towed so I can begin its refresh!
I like the idea of sticking with the brembos so I don't have to worry about whether or not the big KSports will fit under the wheels (currently running XXRs on an et20 18/9.75 so I hope they would be fine)
The car will be getting used on the road, but not as a daily, with a view to run some track days but certainly not competitively.
I like the sound of APs, but cannot find a good deal out there and am reluctant to spend 2 grand just for the front!
Currently running brembos front and rear on a 99 Type R.
Any ideas much appreciated or if anyone knows of some APs for sale please, send me their way!!
Many thanks again to everyone

Also, truth be known... I really like the look of massive stoppers! I think they would work really well with the plans I have for the car, from a form rather than function point of view anyway.
But I wouldn't want to sacrifice function for the form either!
I am sounding like my Mrs.. impossible to please

Interesting point AS Performance, after finally dragging it out of the garage I'd have to agree, they do look large!!
Godspeed set up is looking the favoured option

Brake material choice , some thought's
I went for larger floating disks 330mm and Ferodo DS 2500 , in my view a fair comprimise on dust , wear and bite for a road car with occasional track in mind. Most sintered materials will give you this for 120 - 140 pounds a set but if you track the car more regularly. If you want a bit more response than DS 2500 can give, you can go further with Carbon materials, unsuprisingly These often end up costing considerably more and tend take more of your time too as in terms of dust build up they will foul up your calipers and eat your disks and deposits eat at alloy wheel materials and even argued by some as not so long lasting.
Another trade off is cold bite , if you learn to drive accordingly that may not bother you , personally I find DS2500 did fine , and was not constantly cleaning wheels or replacing disks or pads , depsite my spirited driving.
You might want to bear in mind that if you put a lot more stopping power on the front's that you will need to consider the rears, I'd recommend Carbon Lorrain manufacturer as mentioned by Busta above , I'm now using the RC5 Version (sintered) and Im happy apart from a tiny squeak for first application , which draws cyclists and pedestrian attention if they are not wearing headphones ( which I feel is usefull feature ) The RC5 do not develop much dust and work IMO very nicely , they bite well and the noise is gone after the first hard application.
Generally I find Carbon materials tend to squeak a fair bit more / or for longer, that won't bother you on the track but driving around town you will be looked as if you are just about to Crash so that's not for me.
