Default Paperwork when buying an import from UK owner

When buying a jdm car from it's UK owner should I expect any import paperwork?
I am looking to buy a blob this week from a fella who bought it from a well known and well regarded importer that is often talked about on here. He says the importer brought it over then registered it and he then bought it from them but says he has no papers other than the service book, which of course is in Japanese.
Is this a problem or as I will be the third UK owner am I expecting too much?
I've never owned an import and frankly have no idea what I'm doing but the car seems straight and the usual hpi style checks were done before the car was brought over.
I know am an overly cautious person when it comes to large expenditure so I probably just need my hand holding but have no one to do that for me.

I don't think you are being overly cautious - I would expect to see paperwork too. Without the import paperwork, you are just buying a used car with no history.

At the very least, I would give the importer a call and see if he has records of importing it. I would expect them to have to keep some data for tax and accounting reasons. If they have no records, assume the worst.

I think grade sheet and de-reg certificate should be provided if recently imported which can helkp verify mileage/grade when exported from Japan... But not everyone passes these on.

Thanks everyone. I heard from the importer today who said it was a 4b grade when brought in. The car also has the Jevic sticker confirming the mileage to be correct so I'm happy. Looks like I'll be a first time Impreza own by the end of the day! Good times.

I'd still do the above check if i was you to confirm the grade that Harryr34 has posted in his reply. Costs £25 and you will get auction sheet / grade prev mileages etc.. Its like doing a UK Hpi check

Didn't get the auction sheet with mine and it didn't bother me at all. I inspected the car myself, did my checks online and everything looked good. Never bothered me.

de-registration cert is held by dvla on registration. A copy perhaps may be available in the importer photocopied it before sending off.
