there will normally be a code 2 letters and a number or three letters before your 6 numbers , ej for engine type ty transmission type then google that , but often on a vin plate there are other numbers like transmission type etc that will tell you more than a vin number on a subaru

What vehicle are we talking about??

A Japanese Domestic Model(JDM) vehicle will have a VIN like this........

Most other countries, it will be of this format....

I guess you are refering to the 6 Digit serial part of a JDM vehicle VIN.

Where did you get the above number from?
Usually the engine number is just 6 digits or 7, the first being a letter.

Trying to find info on just the serial number alone is extremely difficult, if nigh on impossible.

From the above I would say you have an EJ20 engine whose serial number is C561691. (have personally never heard of an EJ20C)

Don Clark: We are struggling to figure out what EJ20 engine we have. The car itself is a 2004 Subaru Legacy but the previous owner took out the original motor and installed an EJ20. The engine serial number is B804610. We are troubleshooting some issues that it's having and need to know what the engine came out of so we know how to order parts. Can you help??

The original EJ20 engines fitted to that year Legacy's in Europe and US were designated EJ20X or EJ20Y (280ps) some details of which can be found here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru...ne#EJ20X/EJ20Y
Usually replacing the engine like for like is not always possible, so would imagine an EJ205 engine from an impreza of similar age may have been fitted. It also depends upon what was actually changed (short block/long block/turbo/manifold etc)
