Default UK Law on De-Cat Exhausts

I can't find any up to date information about the law and de-catting an exhaust. Im looking to do this but don't want to end up with a whacking fine. I know it will need to be replaced for the MOT but what are the laws if I get pulled over and they do a roadside test?

You are breaking the law.

It's against the law, plain and simple. You're breaking the legal emission levels. It's not a case of it just has to pass for the MOT. Your car has to comply with the law all year round. I would imagine the punishment would depend on how the copper is feeling that day and whether he's into cars or not

As you haven't said what car or year it's hard to say. .

If youre going to decat it then get a resonated downpipe and wrap it, that way the pipe still looks like it has a cat in it and you can tell them its a sports cat, other than them taking it all off to inspect theyll never know any different.

The problem being is the risk you take being pulled by VOSA on the roadside tests, which we have quite often round here, & having a emissons probe stuck up the exhaust.

Having been decatted and now back to a legal setup I can honestly say I'm a lot happier, also my **** has stopped twitching whenever I have the police behind me.
I was 345 bhp decatted as opposed to 326 with the prodrive sports cat.
Small sacrifice to me and I'm sure you can run high enough power for a road car on a decent sports cat.

Just my opinion.

unless you have a mega loud exhaust your unlikely to get any hassel from vosa unless you get pulled over for something else.

Would be interesting to see who is running the highest power with a legal exhaust system.
Just curious

It's illegal plus it's a pain in the bum to keep swapping over, just get a 3" system with sports cat, there very free flowing.

My forged 2.5 used to run 525 bhp (with meth) with a 3" decat Miltek. This dropped to 510 with the Miltek sports cat centre pipe.

I happily gave up 15bhp to avoid hassle at MOT time etc!

I'm an mot tester and VOSA came and did a routine spot check on us recently and I had to sit down with them whilst they fired a about 10 questions at me...they also said to me that if I spot cars with tampered cats and or weld marks on dpf's where I suspect the insides have been removed let them know and they would put the car details on the police national computer to pull the cars over!!!
not that I would do that but just proves they are on the crackdown!!

With the power most are running a proper 100 cell cat will give a barely noticeable power loss up to 450-500 bhp.

Around here they go out on Police bikes pulling you in from the M1 A45 A508 & bring in convoys of likely culprits, from trucks, buses, cars & bikes to where ever VOSA is based that day, usually the football stadium carpark, plenty of visually modified cars there, including me in a customers car, luckily it had a sports cat fitted, stuck a probe in the exhaust & ran there test's, no problems, but a chap in a Skyline was not so lucky, he was ticketed for none conformance to emissions & various other items, & was taken away on a flatbed.

Would imagine it was the "and various other items" that got him the trip on the flatbed. Minor violations tend to be dealt with via a 7 day rectification notice.

Yes, I think it was parts fitted in the brake system leaking, the camber of the wheels with wire showing through the inner rears, it was quite a list he had.

I know you only get what you pay for but Milltec exhausts seem very expensive. If you want to go legal after running a decat exhaust is there a decent option out there for less than £1k?

Yes, as I stated in the above topic, they were dipping tanks on farm looking Landrover's, pikey looking transits etc, that day I was pulled there must of been 25 - 30 Vosa officers all doing tests, from the above to weighing vehicles to private hire & black cab checks, seem to do it once a month at this location, usually a Thursday.

What about those guys running an original closed deck block from back in the days when it didn't count.

I remember from when i owned my little glanza that if you had an engine from a uk gt turbo 1992 ish... that had no cats and notified DVLA you were safe ?

Obviously this would need to be proven,
