Hi Matt,

Of course we can see it. I guess that some of the BBSers are just lazy *****!

If I had 7K to spend, I'd probably look at a UK car and get the usual mods done to it. You would probably be stretching it a bit to find an STI for 7K, but there are plenty of imported WRX's areound for that. Bear in mind that the WRX will have approx. 240 bhp rather than 276.

The only problem with Jap imports would probably be the fuel. Using SUL all the time can be v.expensive, as I found out with my STI5 TypeR. However, my old UK car lived on NUL all the time, except for track days of course. Servicing is similarly priced for both cars ( UK or Jap). I used to do my UK car myself, as it's dead easy really. The STI was brand new, so still had warranty etc.

Insurance shouldn't be too bad if you've had quick cars before, i.e Cossies. I paid 800 quid for mine, at 26 yrs old. The car was valued at 25K, but had no mods

Obviously 5 doors are cheaper than 4 doors, but don't sell as well. However, the wagons are said to be a better balanced car.

Spend your cash wisely, and you could have a P reg UK car on the drive. Granted it will have in excess of 70K miles on the clock, but my UK turbo had 111,000 on the clock when I p/x it for the STI. To be honest, I prefered the handling on the UK car, as it was more progressive when it slid.

Either way, you can't fail to have fun.

Matt

right people...

youve probably all discussed this a thousand times but i dont spend a great deal of time on hear..but i may do soon

im thinking of getting a scoob so i can actually know what all the cossie vs scooby rivalry is all about.

ive got about £7k to spend so im thinking i can get a 94/95 low miler for that. thing is my mates into the jap imports and brings in sti's ra's and so on. obviously i want an sti (276hp) but i have no idea how id go on with insurance and servicing cos of it being jap. id live with an ra but to be honest id prefer the luxuries that i think you lose with this model. given the state of the market at the mo and the no of imports there are about i dont think ill save that much by getting an import (would i?) so i am tempted to get a uk car and fit the simple mods - filter, zorst etc and live with the reassurance that ill know the cars history (fsh only if uk).

please help cos i only know rs's but am eager to learn scoobs given the chance - you can thank Stef and his CK@ring vid for that

I bought a WRX 94 in Jan & still waiting for the SVA, due end of June. With hindsight I would have looked for one already imported & modded
I paid £3000 for the car & then all the extras, ie fees, shipping,VAT & import tax.
Changed the brakes to 4 pots,17" alloys & had a full service done, I reckon its cost about £6000 in total.
The company importing it could not get it past an SVA,old cars tend to fail emissions test & they dont service them. Had to sort it all out myself, which has taken 6 months from buying the car.
WARNING some of the pictures I was sent were not of the car I bought, not a problem once I'd seen the car & checked it, but could have been a real dog.
Next time I will use a company called mvi-services.com.
The plus side is I can sit in drive & annoy the neighbours, has to be one of the best mechincal noises ever a flat 4.
Took the car for a pre-book MOT which is legal @ a garage 20 miles away the long route.

Hope this is some help, any furhter advice E-mail me. Mark

Thumbs up

From what ive read and heard the normal wrx import has from 240-280 bhp depending on the yr, early model's k-l are 240 m-r 260 later model's 280 bhp.
As the loop hole in the import law's is being closed this yr, this making it much more difficult and expensive to import cars, i expect that the number of wrx's comming into this country will fall dramatically, so with any look the price will settle.
From a personal point of view i borght a 95 wrx about 18 months ago i got it for a very cheap price with 28,000 mile's on it try to find a english one with the same milage for under 8,000!!!
The only bad thing is getting parts, i had one subaru dealer put the phone down on me when i mentioned it was a import!! But now i have found a parts supplyer that imports bits from japan at a very reasonable price, cheeper that a dealer!!
It's down to yourself, remember that a english spec impreza is ins group 17 as opose to wrx import which is group 20.
My insurance is 1600 with priviledge, thats with 3 yr no claim and i'm 26.
If your after info on wrx you can visit iwoc at

MATTOz, i know all about fuel costs, my cossie is run on SUL 97ron with octane booster and it does 20-25mpg. i'm already paying £940 for the cossie but i now know i can get this down to £750, so £800 is fine, im 27 full NCB but have 6pts for 2 sp30's

JohnS, there are some UK scoobs in the autotrader this week at that price. 2 pot brakes would be a definate no no, even my 1989 car has 4 pot standard (on front).

Mark A, I dont think i could stand all the hassle you have obviuosly had , may have to be uk spec after all. oh and dont underestimate the noise mine makes with the 4" full stainless pipe on

keep the comments coming please peeps...

cryptwalk, i think im just gonna try and pick up a clean fsh UK 95, i insure a stage 1 280hp saph thats group 20 (for the obvious reasons) at the mo so if i can get it down to 17 - BONUS.

i heard the SVA thingy has just gone up to £1500 squid so its gonna end up costing roughly the same for a wrx as it is for a uk scoob, thats ignoring all the hassle associated with the import - im thinking to myself is it worth it for the extra 40hp ???

right lets get a few things straight.

SVA, the test costs £165 at present.

Most import garages can 'prepare' a car for an SVA test only takes a couple of days. It normally takes about 2 weeks to get a test booked these days as more places are allowed to carry out the test.

Mark A, sorry to hear about your experience, which company did you use? Why couldn't they get an SVA done? Cowboys.

2wdcossie, firstly when you say scoob I pressume you mean Impreza, I'd like to see a 276 bhp Justy Sti!!!

7k for an STi, pushing it I think, personally I'd save a bit more and get a 'good' rather than the cheapest one about.

I think other peoples posts have covered where to look for the different specs. If your buying from an agent make sure the price quoted is fully inclusive, don't mess about with getting things done yourself, plenty of companies will offer a fully inclusive service. Much less hassle.

Have fun.

Matt.

the more and more i think about it im being put off by imports. granted the spec is better but ive had some major hassle with my current car and i only have history for the past 2 years (bear in mind its a 1989 car). this time i NEED some reassurance of what im buying, i think a nice low miler with no more than 2 or 3 owners will do it. id like to have the spec of the jap wrx's but a prepared to sacrifice this for peace of mind. how do you go on with the 100ron fuel. do you have to use SUL with octane like i have to in the coz? i want to get away from SUL if poss, 86.9p takes the pi$$ IMO. i take it you can run a 95 uk impreza (not justy MattN ) on 95ron UL??

i went on the pi$$ with my mate who does the importing last night, we got talking imports and he said "if i was gonna buy an impreza to run i'd defo buy UK", think that says something!!! i dont quite know what but it must mean summat.

PS i read in a mag at my dads (what car i think) that the SVA test was gonna rocket up in price and also become a much more stringent check, so £165 for how long?

no plans to increase the price of the SVA test, £165, or £25 for a re-test.

the regs will be tougher and **some** cars will need a lot of work to get them through. There are a fews care tactics going on, if you buy a heavily modified car chances are it won't get through without a lot of money spent on it. Standard cars may need a bit more work but £1500 is far too much.

more like an extra 200-300 for your average import. more for the more specialist stuff.

This is supposed to take effect on 1st Aug.

I personally, would get a UK scoob, but more for the fact that selling the buggers on is a real problem with imports.

If I could afford to import, run it for a few months and sell it quickly I'd do it that way but as it stands, some STi's etc, take a very long time to sell and I just don't want that hassle. I change my cars far too often for that!!!!!
