Seen a hawkeye today - I have questions before I offer on it.
Hey guys,
You lot have been keeping me right the last few weeks so hoping to get more guidance.
Went and seen a 2005 hawkeye today. Was tidy enough body wise but had a few things I'd like to get advice one.
Owner says it's been mapped by scoobyspares. Anyone know if they are reputable? It's a 2.5 so this isn't making me feel to calm. Cars done 40000miles but owner says it never missed a beat.
When we started it there was a rough noise. Like a rough bearing. It went away after about a minute. When I restarted it when warm it never happened. Is this the secondary air pump? How hard/costly is this to put right?
Rear diff looked a little greasy to me-is this common? My s2000 diff is spotless and it has double the miles.
Hope you guys can help.
Thank you!
Mikey

Mikey,
The diffs on most scoobys can weep round the filler plug and so look a bit oily,
but the BIG issue is the 2.5 !! if its been mapped irrespective of by who - this engine is prone to ringland failure and if its running any sort of power must be forged
if as you say its making any sort of strange noise on startup - walk away ! unless you can negotiate the cost down to cover an engine rebuild (about 3-4k).

I have owned 8 Subaru's from Classic, Newage, STi Foresters and Legacy's in various forms of spec/modification and not once have any of them had any form of leak or seepage from the rear diff plug.
The engine noise is a concern and I would suggest having the car check by a reputable Subaru Specialist or pay for an AA/RAC inspection. This will either send the seller running or save you a fortune.

The noise didn't seem to come from the engine. It sounded like the air pump to me as it went away and then was fine when started from warm. The car sounded fine.
There was also a electronic whirr from the back which I was thinking might be fuel pump?
I guess the thing bothering me is the remap.
I was surprised at the diff weep. Especially for a 40000miles car!

According to their website, scoobyspares use team Carr aka Andy Carr for mapping.
I don't know this for sure tho, just what the website says.
Was there any paperwork for the remap?
Also put the reg into car check to see some mot history, every little bit of info can be useful.
I would be concerned about the noise on cold start so defiantly get that checked out.

Scott at scoobyspares uses andrew carr, good mapper. Done all of my cars with no issues.
The 2.5 does have a secondary air pump, this is used to warm up so once warm wont stsrt again. It csn be removed as there common to break.
Now the bad bit, the 2.5 is a nice torqey drivable engine, but has its down falls, hg, ringlands, by no mean do i want to scare you but there well know for trouble. My hawk i had to do the hg on it, cost me 1400. With scott at scoobyspares lol, so id say go in with the view you may need to forge it, so budget a good 3k. If you can stomach that and the rd tax then buy it. There a great car. If not look for a widetrack blobeye
