Question

I`m looking to purchase a 2.0 sport in the near future.

I`ve been reading various posts on this site for the past month or so and alot of people seem to comment on the enpensive servicing costs. Is this just applicable to the turbo`s or are the servicing costs for sports very expensive?

The parts i.e. plugs filters etc dont appear to cost much so is it a case of labour at approved dealers?

Also are there any other expenses that i should be aware of before considering a sport?

I`m 23 with only two years no claims hence the sport and not the turbo.

I have had my sport for just over 2 years and in that time, I have paid out £1250 in servicing costs.

Insurance = Group 13. I only pay £431 fully comp protected NCB with a £175 excess (but then I am 36)

Fuel economy is not great - you've still got 4 driven wheels so its never going to be that economical (plus most of my bodyweight seems to be stored in my right foot ).

Oh, and there's been the 7 new tyres at £75 a go.

Having said that, if you can afford to run it, buy one - its nowhere near as quick as a turbo off the line, but you still get a fun car with great handling and it's still a Scooby

Thanks Thunderbird 555,

I`m looking at about £700-800 insurance which isn`t really a problem and at the moment i`ve got a 2.0 Gti with 16`s so fuel economy and tyre price doesn`t sound much different to what i`m spending at the moment.

The main concern that i have is the servicing costs. £1250 sounds a lot on servicing a car in 2 years. What has most of the cost been made up from? Parts, Labour or just very expensive annual services?

At the moment i pay around about £200 a year for services.

I deperately want one of these but the only thing that is putting me off at the moment is unaffordable servicing.

Any more info, comments would be useful.

Cheers

Must admit when I added up my servicing bills, I was quite suprised how much it came to. All the servicing has been done by main dealers, and being close to London labour charges are quite high.

22.5k - £78 (had this done up North).
30k - £451
37.5k - £108
45k - £371 (inc. cambelt)

For the 1 yr bodywork service (anti-corrosion) I paid £160
For the 3 yr, around £75

Hope this helps . Can't break it down anymore than as I don't have the bills here.

Although seems a fair bit in total, doesnt seem to bad when broken down.

Am i correct in assuming you have to have services every 7.5k miles? I thought services were due every 15k?

Do you happen to know what is done on 30k service as this seems quite expensive, especialy as cam belt change was at 45k.

Also what is the bodywork service, as i have never came across this kind of service before. What do you get for you money in respect of this?

Main service is at 15k. IIRC the 7.5k is little more than an oil/filter change and check-over.

I don't use the place that did the 30k service anymore - can't remember what "extras" are done at that service but I did think I was overcharged and the price difference between 1 and 3yr bodywork services has confirmed that.

From what I understand of the bodywork service, it involves injecting a protective wax behind all the panels. This has to be done if you want to keep the anti-corrosion warranty in place.

Maybe someone else will respond later with more info. If I sound a bit vague it's coz all my car stuff's at home, and I'm not!

I've just had my 75k service done and it cost £175 at a main dealer. There are loads of places that do it cheaper, ie: specialist. Have a look at Grahame Goode or www.subaru4you.co.uk who both have pricing on servicing.
