Default 2003 Blob STi or 2.5 2008 STi

Evening guys,

Need some help if you please!

Lost my modded WRX in an accident with a Volvo last year, replaced it with an Alfa (this was supposed to be my sensible choice!) and now I just about want to bang my head against the wall.

Have been looking since the crash for a decent replacement - somewhat hamstrung in going to trader as I need to go from and straight in to another car. Have seen 2 cars want to take a look at - a 2003 340bhp Blob STI with nearly 80,000 miles on it. Not full history (doesn't bother me to much as mine didn't have this and never missed a beat) not heavy mods and looks great. The other is a red 2.5 hatch STI from 2008. This has just over 70k with full history and no mods. I know of all the hatches the 2008 was the big problem child, but at 70k miles, if the engine is fine now, is it likely to be a problem now? It apparantly has a prodrive pack (didn't know you could with the hatch) Its not had a rebuild or anything as far as I know, but I've always held this soft sport for the hatch, even more so when its red (any red impreza does it for me...). The hatch is quite a bit more expensive though.

Considering I have had really bad luck car wise since I lost my Scoob, I could do with some sense talked in to me!

Cheers guys.

If you spent more and went for the 2.5 hatch, could you afford it 'if' something went wrong?

I like the hatch STI too, it looks like a beast compared to the hatch WRX

I would like the low down torque that you get with the 2.5 also

I would be reluctant to pay £500 a year tax, I know it's only £5 a week more than the blob, but it's just knowing it £500 a year

If the hatch is in your price range and you can afford a rebuild if it went wrong, I'd got for it

If not, the blob STI is almost bulletproof, engine can run 450bhp with new turbo and injectors, and you won't have to worry about a rebuild

If you go for the hatch, invest in some guages - oil temp, oil pressure, water temp

Haha nope, no budget after buying the car for an engine pop unless they have come down drastically in price.

Blob STI it is then. Shame - really like the hatch but couldn't do with paranoia, especially as it will be a daily driver

Thank you

If you can afford a 2.5 hatch sti, have you looked at JDM's? They come with the 2.0 twinscroll and cheaper tax, they might be in your budget
