Default Exhaust hole-patch-MOT question.

If a hole in the exhaust pipe (2p coin size) is patched with exhaust putty and bandage to form an airtight seal will it pass an MOT inspection ?
Not on a Subaru but the runabout shed !
Don't really want to spend much on the shed so a quick patch with stuff from the garden shed is the ideal solution as long as it will get through the impending MOT.
Cheers
Brian.

What car is it? You can normally get budget exhausts for cheap. I wouldn't bodge it like that, last thing you want is fumes coming into the car, especially diesel fumes.

New bit of exhaust is about £25, looks like the shed is in for a treat then !

My dad use to wield coke cans on his exhaust back in the day lol.

But back then he had an old pug and and exhaust was worth more than the car. I think it was a few hundred pounds this was in the 80's.

Exhaust can fail on three thing; Leaks. Security. And emissions fail due it showing lean (air will get sucked through the hole affecting the emission testers measurements).

So going by the rules letter by letter you can a pass by gummin up the hole, so long as the rest of the exhaust isn't dropping off. MOT tester's discretion may argue with you on that.

My Jag has had a hole on the centre section bunged up with high temperature silicone for a few years now (I'm not replacing the exhaust until I restore the subframe as it'll have to be chopped off anyway). It's been pointed out as a bodge, but it's never failed.

I wouldnt fail it unless as ali said it was leaking (high lambda reading) or hanging off.

I had the same problem and tried to patch it with putty and a wrap but it didn't pass my WOF (warrant of fitness). Needed new tailpipe but depending where the hole is, shouldnt be too expensive.

Edit: the exhaust was quite old and said that welding it would not work (cant remember why but probably because its old and rusty)
