There's an article in the Telegraph this morning that claims "Scientists have discovered that snappy accelerationcan reduce fuel costs by about a sixth".

Unhappy

Doesn't seem to work for me, any time I use snappy acceleration my mpg drops into single figures

I did notice that when you accelerate flat out for 10 seconds in a scoob you can stay in neutral for the next 2 minutes. If that ain't an economical car. Try that in a corsa!

I think it means accelerate hard to approx 3500-4000 revs and then change up. Fuel consumption is more related to the load the engine is under than actual revs. Fuel consumption will only be slightly less if you drive at half throttle as opposed to full throttle at low revs, but full throttle will be used for a lot less time. Unfortunately this no longer applies once you get past 4000 revs, probably because 1- the engine is producing more power so can accept more load and 2- no one accelerates gently to the red line. The article is misleading in that it advises hard acceleration (to me that means redline every time) instead of full throttle.
