What can a 14k budget get me?
Hello all. Can't believe I'm on Scoobynet again after a break of some 10 years.
I used to run classics, first a JDM WRX, followed by a V4 WRX STi Type R. Both were modified, the Type R heavily. I'd just finished doing all the mods on the Type R and was considering doing some driver training days (well, the driver was the only thing I'd not upgraded!) when I managed to write the car off in an unfortunate incident. We'll leave that story there, but the police were extremely good about what happened and once they'd finished helping me out, they did insist I give them a good write-up on Scoobynet, instead of the usual slating.
Accidents give you a different perspective on driving and so afterwards I had no desire to return to Subaru driving. I've been through many cars since then, all of them fairly quick, but to be honest, my heart has never really left Subaru. My current drive is a BMW 335i. Loads of power, very refined, comfortable, great engineering. Problem is, after one year of ownership I'm so bored with it. It's a quick car, but there's no fun. Before Xmas I was looking at changing to a GT86 Aero or an E92 M3, but both need a budget of about 20k, which I ain't got.
So, the question is, if I put 14k towards a Scooby what should I look out for?
I don't like the 3rd gen hatchbacks, so a Hawkeye STi seems the way forwards and with that budget, but with some nice mods. I do like the look of this:

Thanks folks.
On a sad note, on rejoining Scoobynet, I've just seen Simon Roe died in 2014. Very very sad. I remember him. Such a nice guy. He mapped my Type R.

I`d go £6,000 JDM Hawkeye WRX (or 2004 V-Limited WRX) if I started again, tune it to 350/350 for 4k with a bit of weight saving and plow the rest into handling and braking. What you'd have is the king of the lights and track in a car that would return approx 32mpg.
Also remember to make sure that you buy one with a knackered low compression engine so you get engine oil boost....

It all depends what you are after, assuming it's going to be a daily.
I left a heavily modified type r to a Dakar edition m3, and then a john cooper works mini then returned to a widetrack blob looking for something I wasn't going to loose a load of cash on. It feels very basic going back, not sure how long I'll be using it as a daily for

Yeah, should have said, it'll be a daily runner so it needs to be reliable. I do about 8000 miles a year.
I might add, these days I'm more of an 8/10's driver than a 10/10's driver, so don't need to go nuts on top spec bits. Plus she'll not be seeing a track.
Chrispy you're just down the road from me. Any chance of a ride?
I'll check out Hurst Cars.

Yeah I can't see why not, it's on coilovers though and a few bits of whiteline here and there for good measures so fairly modified to compare
For a daily I'd be tempted by a 2.5 that's been forged, personally think it makes a better road car with the extra torque
If I was looking for something that would hold/gain value I'd be looking at a decent mileage jdm spec c type ra / s203/4 or a really nice classic one, stI type ra / type r

I think Spec C's are worth a fair bit more than I have, but will check on that. I know what you mean about coilovers. The trick is to get some with a spring rate sensible for road use. I'll do some more research. Just thought I'd be interested in having a ride in your car and so how it feels. And you have had the M3 experience too.
That's fine, it's fairly well setup handling wise and ride isn't as hard as my type r was

This has sold but looks on face value a very clean and almost original car which is what I'd be looking for rather than something messed with if I was going this route. I actually called up about it but they weren't giving much on part ex for mine
Saw this car on Auto Trader’s Android App. Thought you might be interested. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi...01510037473904

Sometimes basic is not a bad thing, the more gizmo's you have, the more things that can go wrong.
Wow. Loads of help guys.
Still thinking I want a Hawk not a Blob. Loving the S204 option, particularly because they're rare. A bit of reading indicates it might be a very good road car too (for our roads).
Not yet worked out how the S204 stacks up against a Spec C. Seen some threads on the RA-R too, but think that'd be too track focused.

Just slung a 06/56 2.5 wrx in subaru blue 37k on the clock picking Brand new sti in the morning. ..I did ask if anyone wanted to buy it only cheap money for it it was imaculate. .didn't want a million quid like most subaru owners

Not cheap but you won't loose too much on it, quite tempted myself even though I promised myself I wouldn't buy another Impreza

After looking around at the specs and peoples comments on the cars across various threads, it seems what I need (and can afford!) is a JDM WRX STI. The Spec C is gonna be a bit hardcore as a daily runner and I do like my creature comforts. Sadly the S204 is defo outside my price range.
I'll also probably test a modded Type UK for comparison to a JDM. I'm expecting the power and torque delivery to be quite different.
Think I'm gonna save another grand first. 15k should get me a very tidy JDM car.
