Before I call the dealer, how long should wheel bearings last until they need replacement - sure, it depends on type of driving etc, but roughly anybody ?

So how do you tell that a wheel bearing has gone, or is on the way out ?

I have a funny noise coming from the front drivers side, and it sounds like it is coming form the wheel well.

Its not metallic, its almost a bouncy sorta noise. Very hard to describe ...

It was doing it at Knockhill yesterday, and it was louder under braking, but I don't think its brake related, as it makes the same noise when crusing on the motorway.

Andrew.

One of my MY98 cars had had two sets of fronts along with hub assy's in 45k. Doesn't say much for my drivers does it! It would seem that the bearing can rotate and start to wear the inner hub face.

If you have done some track days the bearings might not last very long.

Experience says 25k if you get the brakes hot and do not have the bearings repacked with grease.

Thanks yr replies - mine has only done abt 12,000 miles, although it has done 5 trackdays, which seems a bit poor.

Dealer (Park Lane) have said they will replace for free though, so top marks to them I reckon.

Andrew, check the hub nut. It sounds like it may be loose! (from what you have described) if its a clonking noise, this is possible although rare.

Hmmm...

Just had my f/n/s wheel bearings replaced along with the hub as this had worn... 25K miles

Noticed by first off, light metallic sound whilst reversing under steering load (ie not straight) then loud screeching sound coming from wheels as I went round corners on the way back from Castle Coombe

Did make a post asking more or less the same question but no-one replied...

Stef

Has CK1 had any of its bearings go?

Mine was just a sort of boomy noise from rear, when slowing or accelerating, which I thought maybe the rear diff but turns out to be bearings. Hard to describe the noise though, and people think you're daft when you try !!

My sad experience:

MY'97: - about 60000 km
left rear bearing gets noisy and is replaced under warranty.
- just after 100000 km (out of warranty) the same bearing fails and is replaced at my expence.

MY'00
10000km , after some hard driving in the snow, BOTH(!) rear bearings replaced under warranty!!!

I heard there is something wrong with their design (my '97 was GL and '00 is RX model, and they both have rear drum brakes) - something about the moisture getting into wrong places or whatever. In other words, this means it will fail sooner or later, and after you replace it - it will fail again!
