Default Steering feels 'looser'?

Hey,

I'm not 100% but I keep feeling as though my steering is starting to feel looser. The steering wheel seems like it has more play and it almost sometimes feels like it's starting to tramline a little.
Its not tyres and nothing has been changing or replaced or worked on, on the car recently.
What would be the symptoms of problems with the steering rack?
I have no idea about steering components so wouldnt have much clue what could go wrong.

Any advice?

Ta :-)

UK classic?
The steering was never brilliant to start with but wear in the bushes would give you a loose feeling when driving.
Try (when stationary) turning the wheels, just wobble the steering, any play should show up (have someone watching next to you), it may not even be steering rack related but another steering component.

is the car lowered and how old are the tyres ?
when was the alignment last checked ?
If the answer is yes to lowered and old tyres then you can start to wear the inside edge of the tyres, after a while the tyre is no longer flat but shaped, when the tyre travels over bumps/pot holes and the like the car will they try and follow these, this could be the Tramline effect you are experiencing.
