im on the look out for my next car and ive seen a few i like but they are not private sales so from a trader/dealer etc

what do they have to give you by law regarding a warranty? im asking as ive been offered a car for below its screen price but with no warranty or for an extra £500 i could have the 3 month warranty. i thought they had to give you so much as standard anyway?

i know its a bit of a grey area

I believe it's 30 days by law.
Most warrantys aren't worth the paper they're written on tbh.
You could always buy an independent decent warranty from AA/RAC ect...but you really need to read all the fine print to make sure EVERYTHING is covered

 

Car has to be be fit for purpose. I don't think there's an official time on how long. But if it breaks down within a month you can take it back, and they have to repair or refund. I think i've heard of cases where its been longer than a month.

The whole purpose of buying from a dealer is come back. Or else everyone would buy private. My mum bought a car from a dealership, and it failed within a month, took it back, they tried to get out of fixing it, but did it the end.

 

I stand corrected, the law seems to have changed. See link, you now have 30 days after 1st of October 2015.

cheers guys, if i take the car with the agreed price drop and no warranty surely i would still have the standard 30 days then as thats the law?

regarding buying a warranty from a company.................im still debating this as i feel that when i need to claim they will try and worm their way out of it

I bought a Corsa VXR Nurburgring from Vauxhall a couple of years ago. Within a week it had developed a coolant leak. I took it to another Vauxhall dealership to inspect it.....turned out the gearbox and diff were also knackered. After about 2 months of two-ing and fro-ing, emails and phone calls and finally threatening them with court action (I did seek legal help from my solicitors....Irwin Mitchell, who were brilliant to be honest), I finally got a full refund of £12,500 (I paid cash for the initial sale). Vauxhall didn't have a leg to stand on as the problems with the gearbox and diff would have started before I bought it, which meant them not checking the car properly, therefore being unfit for sale.

Just thought I'd share that little story lol!

 

Maybe, I'm guessing by the way you worded it though he is actually trying to sell it to you with ZERO warranty. Now, yes you can go all legal and throw the sales and goods rule book at him, but, dealers have very hard skin; they make it a hard time if you decide to go down a claims route.

I know a guy who does this; he sells bangers on the basis of sold as seen after test driven all existing faults noted and accepted. He walks a fine line and TBH I'm amazed he gets away with some stuff, but if it did go all legal; He'll just wind up the business and start up again. So far anything major he's encountered he's just refunded the car if it comes back in the same week.....He will fob off anyone who comes back a few weeks later, or offer a reduced refund. And despite this IMO he is one of the better guys; there are plenty of independents that will laugh at your face and tell you do one after returning the car the very next day, regardless of the law.

X5 v8...look for any leak from a hole to the left of the water pump, or any silicone sealer in the hole and any copper coloured residue in the header tank (K-seal...dodgy dealer's favourite quick fix for a major fault; a failed transfer pipe seal). Also make sure someone has had a very thorough inspection of the steel brake pipes around the fuel tank....it could save you a very big bill. Even a legit warranty won't cover rusty brake pipes as its wear and tear (corrosion from age)

 

Thanks for the input guys, it was my idea to ask regarding the warranty and the guy did say the warranty only covers up to £1000.

Are you talking from experience regarding the x5? Is the failed transfer pipe seal a big job? My main concern is the autobox

also, AA offer 'breakdown repair cover', if you car breakdown and your car isn't drivable, the AA will pay up to £500 towards the repair

 

I work at a used car dealership & we used to use the RAC for warranties but we had a few customers ringing us & complaining that they wouldnt pay out on repairs.

We later found out off the rep that it was just a company that bought the rights to use the RAC name.

We have now changed to Autoguard who are 100% better.

 

Pay the deposit with your credit card as long as it's £100 or more you are covered up to £30k on your card for faulty goods. Have a read on the citizen advice website it will explain in more detail. And it does cover cars.

 

Martin Lewis said you don't even need to spend £100 on the credit card. It is the actual value of the goods, not the amount you pay on a credit card. so even if you pay £5 on a credit card, the goods are covered
