Default 22B WANTED!

I'm looking to buy a good 22B.

I've looked on the usual places but haven't had any luck.

Anyone on here know one for sale, or own one and want to offload it to me?

They've been a bit thin on the ground recently. The prices for them have started to rocket over the last couple of years so I imagine owners are keeping them tucked away in the hope they'll sell for a fortune in a few years.

The one at hurst looks a nice car and the mileage is very attractive. Shame it's been messed with but it wouldn't be that hard to put it back to standard. Price seems fair as well in my opinion

Just thinking that seems a good price considering the mileage, Even if you sold the aftermarket stuff on it and put it back to standard you could make a few ££££ back just selling the front and rear AP's and putting some refurb standard brakes back on!!!

Hardest thing to replace would be the wheels, however I know Stu had a set for sale for £1500.

That car definatly needs putting back to standard, it's almost criminal to have a front mount on it !!!!

Nowt wrong with a FM on a 22B if you're pushing decent power. 👍

Hi,

Please don't shoot me down here...but may I ask why this commands a price tag that's nearly £30k?
I understand P1's, Type R/RA's etc being £6k+...but £30k for this 22B?
What am I missing?

Rare car.

"
In 1998, Subaru of Japan produced a widebody, coupe WRX STI called the "22B STI" produced between March and August 1998. The 22B was used to commemorate both Subaru's 40th anniversary as well as the third consecutive manufacturer's title for Subaru in the FIA World Rally Championship. On the release of the sales, all 400 Japanese units sold out from 30 minutes to 48 hours, depending on the report.[6] Another 24 were produced for export markets—16 for the UK, along with another 5 for Australia, and 3 prototypes. The 16 cars imported to the UK were modified by Prodrive, with longer gear ratios, and UK specification lights. Because 50 22Bs had already been imported privately into the UK, Subaru had to wait until 1999 to register the 16 officially imported cars under the VCA's Single Vehicle Approval scheme.
The 22B had the EJ22 engine (note, the internal Subaru material states the closed-deck block comes from a V3 EJ20G). This means the displacement was increased from 1,994 cc to 2,212 cc. It produced 280 PS (210 kW; 280 hp). This car was given a unique color of blue and had fender flared widebody taken from the Peter Stevens designed WRC car, thus widening the width by 80 mm (3.15 inches). The car has a unique hood, front and rear fenders, a WRC-inspired front bumper and a unique adjustable rear wing. During assembly, a WRX Type R chassis was taken off the line. The fenders were replaced with the 22B STI fenders. The suspension is provided by Bilstein, while the brakes were 4-Pot front/2-Pot rear STi calipers, painted red. The wheels were increased in size from the standard WRX Type R STI from 16- to 17-inches and the clutch was upgraded to a sintered twin clutch with a ceramic disk. The origin of the name 22B has often been debated. Many assume 22 referred to the 2.2 liter displacement and the B was for the Bilstein suspension. This would correlate with the idea that Subaru sells a Legacy Spec B, where the B represents the Bilstein suspension. The car's curb weight is 1,270 kilograms (2,800 lb)."

I knew the 22Bs were not very common...but didn't realise that this was the sole cause of the huge price tag.

Although it's still £28,990 on their own website it was interesting to note that the seller changed the Pistonheads advert to POA. I now suspect the seller wants a lot more than £28,990

22B's were £25k years ago, so £28,990 does seem like a bit of a bargain in the current climate to me.

When I have the cash (and I soon will when the sale of a property completes) I will be seriously tempted, but I very much doubt this one will still be for sale by then.

I would think a genuine 22B front bumper, genuine side skirts, genuine rear spoiler and complete suspension set would be fairly difficult to find as well

Also of note is the A pillar ariel appears to be missing....

Would love to own one, but then would I? Defo be nice to have the cash burning a hole in my pocket.

They're a garage tart! Couldn't just park up at tesco's for some **** to ping the front bumper or wing. I doubt you can even get genuine replacements?

People say some P1 stuff is ridiculous to replace but I saw a 22B wing badge sell on ebay for over £100.

And as said above anything from standard doesn't go!

The more I look at this car the more I see things 'not quite right'. I know Max, and he's a very good dealer so I'm quite sure he knows what he's doing.

Few things on the car don't quite add up.

Maybe thats why its the price it is (was). Surely anyone dealing with Impreza's would know its been a while since 22B's were selling for under £30k..!

Sold mine for less than that last year. I remember when I was looking they were lucky to be fetching £22k.

It would certainly be fair to say it's had a relatively 'colourful' history, given the number of original parts which are missing (and that's only from having had a quick look at the photo's ). Although i could easily understand that, to the un-educated eye, it may well pass for a fairly good example.

I very much doubt the dealer would know the difference tbh, as there are very few people who have in-depth knowledge/experience of these cars in their original form, such is their rareity....

There is a VERY big difference between the value of an original/genuine/unmolested 22B, and one which has been heavily modified or damaged and repaired with non-genuine/replica panels etc.

As for the value of a genuine/un-molested/low-miles example, i bought one with 1 owner and 13k miles in 2005 for £22k, sold it with 19k miles in 2011 for £27k. It changed hands again for a fair profit last year and was sold again by a dealer last month for circa £45k!

So the value of good original examples is definitely rising

As mentioned above, does anyone know the history of this car or know its number /400?

I'm interested in this car, but would like any information on it, just so that I might know what I'm up for to return it to stock please.

Thanks,
Rob

Have you not read my posts above Rob?

I have a fair bit of history on it, starting from when it was imported by WRC sales in Bradford around 10 years ago...

To return to standard you would be looking for:-

Wheels
Brakes
Suspension set
Rear links & trailing arms
Front bumper
Side skirts
Rear spoiler
A-pillar ariel
Wing mirrors
Intercooler
Exhaust
ECU
Steering wheel & gear ****
Who knows what else once you have a closer look???

If you think you can get hold of that lot then go for it

Thanks for that. Yes, I actually spoke with Max earlier today about the car, and got quite a bit of information, but I guess what I was wondering was, what happened to the car? Was it in a big accident? If so, is it a CAT C or D? Or has it been stolen / recovered with parts stripped? Or was it an ex race car, etc etc.

Just really trying to understand anything about it before getting too serious. Most parts can be bought over a few years (I owned my last 22B for 7 years), so I'm not too bothered by having to source parts.

But if theres a deeper reason, then that would give me pause.

Hope that makes sense?
