Default Whirring noise?

I am getting a whirring noise on start up which stops
after a minute or so. I am thinking its fan belt, would
I be right?

With the bonnet open I can't really pinpoint it but it seemed
to lessen after I tightened the tensioner thingy.

Maybe your belt is on it's way out? I had that kind of noise and it still continued after I'd tried tightening the belt. So I took the belt off to inspect it and it looked fine on one side but on the grooved side I could see that the rubber was starting to perish and had little cracks in it. I bought a new from the local motor factors for about £5, used a YouTube video to show me how to put it back on correctly and now I have no noise, job done.
