Default Labour charges

Putting the Scoob in to a local garage down here in Colchester to have a few minor things done. Blowing up-pipe gaskets, front drop links and a new nearside wing put on. No tools down here (Scotland is home) so needs must. Already booked in, called today to ask if it was possible to drop it off early and to get a price.

Guy said £78/hr including VAT for labour. Is this excessive? Usually DIY minor jobs like these How many hours do we rekon?

Does seem rather high. Is it a high street garage or a small backstreet one?

Just a small (2 ramps) independent garage. Wondering if I'm in for a shocker of a bill for seemingly trivial parts!

Nah, I haven't. These guys are closest and they kindly let me use their ramp and tools for 15 mins a few weeks ago to tighten up my downpipe to centre section nuts.

Mechanic in the garage has a Scooby and has had a few, so seemingly in good hands.

£35/hr including VAT? They maybe charging me more as I'm supplying all parts?

They were originally going to fit a few other bits too, but I've swiftly cancelled those, save me a £400 bill!!

Does seems high - that's the sort of rate you'd expect from a large specialist with fancy premises, courtesy cars etc.

OTOH I've never found a place as low as £35/ph. I think it depends on where in the country you are - if in striking distance of London £50-70 ph is the norm.

Colchester is not a kick in the rear from London, that may be something to do with it. They're also in the town centre. Is it worth my while trying to get a fixed price when I drop the car off, have a little barter with them?

place round the corner from my work charges £25/hour and they have 3 proper lifts and a full set of snap on diagnostic gear - seems to be decent work out of them too any time I've left the car in.
