Default replaced turbo and got no ooomph

So the turbo on my 1999 turbo 2000 was on its last legs a month or so ago and so I got a second hand replacement original td04. The idea was to do a straight swap after I initially bought completely the wrong replacement and some helpful people on here saved me from getting fitted.

Didn't seem to be anything wrong with the replacement I got, it had relatively low mileage, the garage that fitted it said it looked fine but I picked up the car yesterday and it just doesn't seem to have much boost. Nothing sounds obviously wrong, it's just the kick at about 3000rpm doesn't seem to happen.

To give some idea of the kind of pace it has, my mate (who was following me home in his Seat Leon Couple) was keeping up with me along windy 2nd and 3rd gear corner country roads. Not being insulting about his car but it's a bit **** and has never been able to get anywhere near mine.

Is there anything obvious that might be causing this, I understood that I didn't need any remapping as I was swapping like for like for the turbo. Failing that is there some kind of specialist for this kind of thing in South London?

Is it actually making more boost than actuator pressure?....Have you a boost gauge?

A boost gauge would of helped you,as you would of seen any sign of boost drop, but feeling it on the peddle is the next best thing as you know how your car drove before, and as the turbo is the only thing that you have changed it must be linked to that, could be an air leak around or the actuator is duff and not holding the gate shut tight when the turbo is coming on boost its just being bleeding it away before peak boost pressure is achieved, first thing check all hoses and connectors and try to pick yourself up a boost gauge if you have not got one as they do come in handy to alert you of any problems in the turbo area i.e loose hoses knackered turbo etc...SJ.

Check all the boost pipes (little 5mm) in particular the ones going to the boost solenoid on the driverside suspension turret, dump valve and inlet manifold.

Agree with above sounds like restrictor pill or air leak, make sure all pipes are tight etc

Thanks guys. No I don't have any kind of boost gauge. Sounds like I should drop it back at the garage then and get them to check it all over. If I pick up a gauge are they relatively easy to fit?

Set the actuator preload on the wastegate
It should be half a holes width too short !!!

Eg . You should need to pull the wastegate arm over by half a holes width onto the flap

Hope that makes sence if not google wastegate preload

That should give you some boost but a gauge is needed to make sure what it's actually boosting too
