Default Morrette headlights on classic

Looking for people's opinion on morrettes on a classic. I have crystal lights at the moment but quite like the look of the morrettes.

My concern is I don't want the car chav'd up. It's 792 royal silver so photos of what you have would be good.

Thanks.
Dave.

Had them on mine, they are SOOOO much better for light output than the standard lights, whether crystal or earlier, trust me.

IF you can get them. The inners went through a period where they were all but unobtainable, Cibie, the original mkaers had stopped production. You can now replace them with Hellas, which are actually better, since they don't take the awful H2 bulb, but an H3, which does take to use of an uprated bulb. The H2 is a liabaility in anything other than 55W, and wasn't available as an uprated, only higher wattage

Having said that, here are a couple of pics of the light output from mine, using mildly uprated H4's in the outers and standard bulbs in the inners:

The above is on dips, GE Megalight 60% uprated H4 bulbs, outers lit only.

And this is main and dip, the inners are lit now too, with standard H2 55W bulbs.

And here's one of the front as it was. It has now gone back to crystal lights with HID projectors, see here: https://www.scoobynet.com/technical-...mpler-way.html

Thanks very much for the reply. It's gave me a bit to think about. Why did you get rid? Was it purely because the projectors are a better light?

Not a fan either, the classic is a good looking car standard, to many people mess with them trying to improve, best way to improve is stick to standard parts, to many halfords stickered up messes out there already

If you had a bugeye then yes, as they were born ugly and morrettes really improve there look

This was my fear. I look at some and think they look good but then I see others and think, chav chariot!

Personally I liked them BETTER than the standard, especially with the frames colour coded to match the car. And I've always been a believer in making lights do what they are supposed to do, then match/fit them to the car, rather than what Subaru have done with classics, which is to design something that goes with the car, BUT DOESN'T WORK PROPERLY AT ALL.
That's one reason I've always been a fan of rally lights: they look odd, yes, but boy, do they perform?

Why did I get rid? Wanted a change again, and mainly because the inners were going rusty on the reflectors, and at that time, were impossible to replace, so it looked awful and wasn't as bright. Mine lasted longer than some, since I pre-treated the lights before fitting, but they eventually succumbed.

I think morettes look odd when colour coded to the car but give an aggressive look when just black.
I had a set on my last classic which I modified to allow for a cold air intake. I also changed the outer lenses to a crystal type.
I wanted to replace the inner lamp but the price of those is crazy.

Still not a fan but Matty is right they look better in different colour.

Most of the time i've seen them used was for the purpose of an induction pipe.

At the end of the day there's always other options to make your lights more powerfull, but its up to you, if you prefer the looks.

For me, I couldn't care less which lights do their job better because my Impreza's never get used at night. I chose morettes on that car for the 'look' and the ability to use the inner space for a cold air feed.

Very timely thread - I've just received a brand new set in the post, half an hour ago. Reasons for fitting are purely functional, the standard lights are not fit for rapid night driving, and I need them to be. Hoping this will be a useful improvement. Don't care if other people think they're chavvy or whatever, it's my car, and none of my business what other people may think. It's also Royal Silver 792, so I'll put up some pics when I've fitted them. Meanwhile, here's a shot from http://www.northursalia.com Personally, I don't think they look bad at all, especially in black.

Mmmm.... Do you have a link for where you got them and are you keeping them black?
Don't know if I would go new incase I didn't like them. It's purly cosmetic for me as I don't do much night time driving.

Not sure I like the black on silver??!!

You can still purchase these brand new from eBay, expensive though. Roughly £350

No link sorry, got them cheap from a friend of a friend - bought new a few years ago but never fitted. They've got Hella lamps. I'll keep them black until I find out wether they're any good or not, then maybe paint them 792, maybe not.

They were never cheap, I reckon I paid around £300 for mine twelve years ago.

Need to get looking for a second hand set. I don't want to be spending 350 and then I don't like them.

Thanks for the replies

Be careful.
Most second hand ones will be in need of new inners at the very least, which is not cheap, coming in at around £130, although you may get them cheaper.

A full set of outers and inners seems to be £140.

IF the lights you buy aren't decent, they end up looking gash and you won't like them.

I bought new outers for £35. I wanted new inners but the cheapest I found them for was £130 which I wasn't prepared to pay.
Usually the outers are fine but the inners rust up. I've had a few sets over the years and every single one has had rusty inner lights. Hence why replacements are so expensive.

That looks lush mate, if you don't do any rural night driving, I'd leave it as it is.
