buying advice
Guy's I'm considering going back down the Subaru route. Sold my last STi many years ago and kinda miss the old gal.
There is not many for sale around my area and it seems that If i want one then its going to be a trip over the Scottish border down south.
So I have been trawling the auto trader and PH for the last month and keep seeing the same traders offering lots of Subaru's
Clives Performance, Boys Toys and Graham walker seem to come up a lot and have quite a large stock of STi's
Some of the descriptions against the pictures do leave a little to be desired, where as described as immaculate but the engine bay pictures have screws missing and oil all over the place.
Having owned a super clean Scooby in the passed I know what i'm looking for I guess you do have to keep in mind that these cars are getting older now and my expectations might be too high.
Does any one have any experience with the above mentioned dealers.
Now the second thing is I keep seeing Wide Track models, whats the advantage of a wide track version. And what year did they start fitting the swoosh gauges into the STi's

I would suggest that you do a search for the garage that your looking to buy from.. Most have a very bad reputation.. Also it would be wise to post a link up when you have found one that you fancy.. And keep asking questions.. But don't be offended by the replies!

I think the widetrack just has a wider wheel base, not sure on engine

Like you already said there getting old now, and trying to find a mint clean one, will be very hard. I wouldn't bother with dealers, if your going to find a minter then best to trawl through the for sale adverts on here/Pistonheads and find a enthusiasts owned car thats been pampered!!!

Thats the problem, its not just the bodywork. But also 10-13 year old suspension parts and underneath rust etc, and when your looking at some of these widetrack blobs that are asking £10-11k, if you go look at a 10-13 year old German car underneath and look at a Subaru you will see where im coming from.

I had never considered importing to be honest. I'm not sure where I would start or if these Is a specific company that are specialists.
If you look to imports are there things like the dash is in KM and then the jap radios that need replaced and then a pile of paperwork along with insurance company issues.

a lot of the import companies now will take care of all that crap for you - you pays your money and you picks it up MOT'd, converted, fuelled, taxed and ready for the road.
A radio isn't a big deal to swap out, it's something most people change anyway and if you liked stock I've seen UK ones for 20 quid on here. Insurance can be a kicker but insurance will be a kicker on any high powered car.
Check with your broker if they will cover it in principal and then start scoping out car importers i'm sure there are a few lurking on here.

I hadn't considered a Spec-C, are those the light weight models without some of the luxuries of air con etc.
Dan oddly enough you guys did insure my 03STi for around 7 years however when i moved to Mitsi you would not cover me so i had to move to a specialist for insurance on the new car.
Budget wise I will go to 10k and above however it would need to be a diamond of a car.
I did like the look of this.
Only a few things put me off is that the flog lamp cover on the right hand side looks a different colour, Yes I'm super fussy, also i'm not sure if its that this car is an Import but there is no plastic stone guard at the back wheel where the door closes and no rubber strip round the rear wheel arches as found on euro and UK models.

if you use a garage id suggest hurst cars in bedford.

Also looks like the suspension has had a lot of work, I'm after something that's as standard as possible.
Me looking for a car is worse than my wife picking a new pair of shoes

Yes but don't most German cars have a coating of Aluminium on them?
Plus if they have been properly undersealed should be ok, mines 16 years old and had all the body checks and undersealing done when it was younger, just jacking points that rally need sealing again
