Default Impreza STI Bouncing

I have a Impreza STI type uk 2006.

A couple months ago I was playing with it on an old all weather pitch full of very fine gravel type stuff- perfect for drifting ;-) Anyways when I left I couldn't go over 40 mph without the car bouncing and shaking the spolier was going wild so I went straight to a car wash and got the guys to give up in the wheel arch and suspension a good blast as I thought it may be trapped gravel/dirt after this the problem went away and it was back to normal. Yesterday I decided to go back for a little play around at the same place and it didn't seem to do any harm this time until I got over 80 mph it was bouncing/shaking like a bitch I've tried pressure washing 3 times with no luck and have been down the m6 today wich was not very pleasent it literally cannot go over 90 without the risk of loosing control and driving normally isn't the same it doesn't feel as safe on the road as usual I'm starting to think I've damaged something does anyone have ideas or advice on how to help/fix this it please.

Cheers

Could be anything from a buckled alloy and alignment issues through to smashed shocks.

Get the car up on a ramp and see if there's any give in the shocks. And see if there are any wobbles in the wheels on rotation.

Yes it is the DCCD model I altrered it to manual and rearward so the Diff was free and the green light was on the dash. But on normal use it is always on auto

We'll I suspect what you are experiencing is some sort of "transmission windup"

Maybe the DCCD system is not fully unlocking the Diff (whatever the lights on the dash/console say)

Do a google search for

transmission wind up

So ypu bought an impreza and drove it across a field and donutted it and it now makes funny noises.
The idiot behind the wheel is at fault here.
Sell the car asap!

I have Googled and have a understanding of what it means some guys are saying nothing serious others are. In your experience what would you say are my options is there any way of having a go myself or best of returning to subaru to take a look?

well it seems you potentially have two issues

i.e. is your transmission still "wound" up (if it is the actual cause of the problems)

and does the DCCD system work as expected

for the first - you can try and jack one wheel up - this should allow the transmission to unwind - also you can try and turn the wheel, by hand, with the others still on the ground - it should turn quite easily, if it does not, then your diffs maybe in a locked or semi locked (limited slip) mode - tbh I am not an expert on the actual workings of the Subaru DCCD system, all my cars (4x4's) have had crude but very effective mechanical diff lockers

if the wheel turns quite easily then I would assume it is OK to drive,

you then need to find out if the DCCD is working as expected - which may need specialist help with, although I am sure you could do some limited problem diagnosis - there must be a thread on here somewhere about that

Could be wheel balance? If you've got a load of crud caked on the inside of your wheels, or knocked some weights off, or buckled a rim.

I had a slightly buckled rim - had it on the back without knowing for months. Rotated the wheels one day, and the car was almost undriveable.

Will cost you about £20 to get them all checked for balance. Worth it before doing anything else.

S**t on the inner / inside of the rim seen it more times than enough. In a stage no problem wouldn't notice between stages on the road nearly undrivable. Glad you got it sorted.

As said - sounds like transmission wind up. I read into this when I was trying to get my car onto the drive on full right steering lock and the car was doing as you describe. Stopped as soon as I pulled the hand brake up one click. Has never done it since, but was scary to say the least.
Always look after your car as much as possible and it will look after you. Abuse it and you will see it abuse you (your wallet).

If you want to understand the engineering principles behind differentials - and by extension understand the terms, slip, limited slip, locked, open etc

Look at this great video

Skip to 1.30 odd - but great stuff
