Default Piston Slap

Would you buy a car with piston slap when cold.

had a couple of classics in the past that have had it slightly and cleared when warm, seen a nice classic that is taking my fancy and has piston slap - would you still buy?

I think most of the classics have it now

Long as it don't last long and doesn't when it's hot.

My dads bug WRX has piston slap on start up and then it clears when warm, I put it down to thin grade of oil and the fact its done 90k miles on the original engine.
I'll try and change the oil to a thicker oil in the next few weeks, and see if that clears it/makes it less noisy on start up!!!

Had a few classic's and never had one with piston slap.

I neverly bought an STi classic for £1500 with piston slap but put me off, regret not buying now

Cars with forged pistons will do it more than ones with cast piston due to the increased clearances with forged pistons when cold. They will expand more when hot hence the noise disappearing when it gets hot.

Can someone briefly explain what this is as mine seems to have developed it on start up for a minute or so.

To put it simply its when the pistons rattle in the bores from cold, normally its due to bore wear on a higher mileage engine and normally clears when the pistons heat up and expand slightly to take up any excessive clearances, it can also be associated with excessive piston skirt wear.

the only real cure is a rebore and oversize pistons.

I believe that 97/98 year cars had this as a built in free extra from new,I know my 97 car does it,tho since using 5w40 Titan pro s its barely noticeable.A Fiesta RST I had years ago was a bast for it but that had been flogged to within an inch of its life.
