Default Sticky Lifter ???'

Hi

Following on from my last post I have had a couple of people say that "Could the noise be a sticky lifter" ???

Is this something that can be the problem and do they suffer from this problem?

Its a ticking noise coming from the right hand side that does not go away

definatly not coming from the centre of the engine and when I last drove it it sounds like a playing card on a pushbike wheel spoke like we done as kids

Drives ok (only drove it home from were it started doing it) but is slightly down on power

Your thoughts please

Ian

As above and like my last comment. If you're talking about a classic and when you say right you mean near side have you made sure your coil pack to ht leads aren't arching?

Have a look, don't touch or it'll knock you on you ***

It let you know you are alive, go touch it!

Could be a shim going out of tolerance, had a shim fail on mine that caused the same kind of noise to begin with

The sound is defiantly not coming from the centre of the engine so don't think its the ends and still drives ok and the noise doesn't change under load if any of that helps.
Only on the right hand side too as in the vid

that does sound a bit nasty. take the cam belt cover off on that side and check to see if the belt is flapping around.

Ouch that doesn't sound good. I'd echo the comments regarding getting under the cam cover and seeing what you find.

Get a stethoscope and listen round the engine, its quite hard to tell from the video, hopefully it isnt but that sounds like big end knock to me.

I don't think that's a big end knock, big ends don't knock at idle unless they are totally shot. That sounds similar to when a shim went missing on my mates version 4 type R, we found it in the sump and replaced it and the noise vanished. I don't know which types of shims your engine uses, his were under bucket and it somehow slipped out creating a massive clearance.

the shim is what is used to adjust the valve clearances because Impreza's don't use hydraulic lifters. The shim will either be on top of the bucket between the bucket and cam or underneath the bucket between the bucket and valve depending on which type is fitted to your car. Which model Impreza do you have?

I was under the impression the early WRXs used hydraulic lifters.

Very early ones may do, the Legacy Turbo (single) used hydraulic tappets.

02 sti has shimless buckets, so no hydraulic lifters or shims.!!! So that rules out that!!

Whip the cambelt covers off and check the cambelt tensioner is not flapping about. Have heard the tensioner can fail, rarely mind, and so it slaps against the block causing knocking noise. It's in about the right area for the noise too.
