Default MoT emissions - proving the car is not on VOSA database

I know this has been covered before but I have scoured the threads and still have questions. My MY93 WRX RA has failed the MoT cat-equipped emissions test (it doesn't have a cat).

My understanding is that the MY93 car is not an exact match in the VOSA database and therefore qualifies for the less stringent BET test. However, the tester said that as he was able to look up the reg number in the VOSA database, this proves my car is included in the database and therefore ineligible for the non-cat test.

Given the Impreza wasn't introduced in the UK until 1994, that could be one line of argument but there must be others knowing that others' pre-96 cars have been shown to be non-listed.

I'll be speaking with VOSA tomorrow, but would also be grateful for any tips here.

Hi,
I had the same problem with a 95 wrx ra. I printed this out for them and it passed straight away.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for the replies - the question is what is an "exact match". The tester today said that as my reg number shows up as an Impreza 2.0, that means it's on the database.

From what I was always lead to believe that cars pre 1992 didn't need to have a cat and then could be tested cat less. I heard that several years ago from an mot tester, but the laws could of changed by now

Have you asked on the type-ra.com forum? There might be someone there who could help with the vin plate on yours, as a wrx ra shouldn't be on the vosa database. Mines a 95 and that wasn't on, so i had a non cat test.

Mine failed last week but mines just a WRX. Can I check somewhere on-line to see if mines on vosa database? I would just love to take the above over and say you tested it wrong lol
And mine has a sport cat on it too
