...have a waiting list and restricted import quotas as it was in '99, or short delivery times now?
When we had to wait up to a year it was a painfully long wait but you new the second hand residuals were solid gold. You could still grey import an Sti and the residuals were just as good. IMHO the typical owner back then was an enthusiast for the mark and the dealers were more focused.
Now you can get your car as soon as you want but you'll lose loads come resale along with the hassel of finding a buyer.
Is it better now or not?

A year is too long to wait for any car, don't you think? But then it seems stupid to have thousands of cars sitting on airfields going rusty!
Besides which I'm too skint to buy a new car

Fear not Bob, you aint alone
Had to have 2 new shocks on the MR yesterday, as well as brake pads and gearbox oil - £220, which aint bad, but not the best timed maintenance requirement in the current financial period
Skintness must be a trait of our area

But John, anyone lucky enough to get on the impreza ladder back then, could pick up his car and at the same time order the next. He'd know that he could have a years motoring and swap to the new car for next to nothing or sell and get all the cash back.
If I wanted to be like the common man I'd have bought a Cossie

I was the first guy to get a scoob turbo in my area back in '98, but now there are dozens. It was great as it was still a Q car and you could tell the car buffs by NOT asking "Subaru who makes them then ?"
Thats the sad thing they have become a victim of their own success and to a lot of people the latest toy. Everyones now an expert and if you meet another driver in the petrol station they all have 350 bhp on NUL petrol
It does mean that there are more meets and more activities though which is the plus side.
