Default An idiot needs help

Hello all.

I am afraid this is another caliper painting thread/question.

I have done a search on here and noticed their are a variety of opinions and techniques but not a definitive guide.

I have got a brand new set of 4 pot calipers courtesy of Godspeed. I have given them a good degrease, but noticed the surface of the caliper is very corse and not smooth at all.

I would like to paint them black with orange lettering.

What paint is best? Hammerite or caliper paint.
Brush or spray?
Take the caliper apart( if so how? Or mask and paint?

Please answer as if you're speaking to a noob

I've have used 3 options for painting calipers.

Caliper paint and brush it on. It had degreaser, paint and hardener in the kit and personally thought it was a lot of faffing around especially when the next 2 options don't need hardener.

Hammerite and brush it on goes straight on and worked well.

Powder coating works well but you do have to mask up everywhere you don't want the powder to go obviously my local powdercoaters did all that for me and charge very little for it.

For all 3 methods you can leave the caliper together.

Cheers. A good tin of hammerite smooth it is then.

Exactly what I was going to recommend.

Do the first coat thick enough to cover, but not thick enough to produce sags and runs.

Add a second coat after about an hour on a warm day, two on a cool one, certainly in under 24 hours. Leave 24 hours to harden.

If the calipers are fitted, you can put the wheels back straight away.
