182 to wrx?
Hi guys
It's insurance renewing time and I'm currently driving a clio 182, it's pretty much standard and is quick.
however my insurance on a wrx is now pretty cheap!
So I was wondering if anyone has owned both and can point me in right direction as to whether to sell the clio and buy a wrx?
I was looking at the 02plate 215bhp wrx
Can you get easy power up grades for these?

Blimey, if you think an RS Clio is quick lord knows what you'll make of an Impreza. I own both, a Ph1 172. The Clio is slow and it cries out for another 15% power - which I've tried to get but don't want the big cost of cams. The Clio is what it is, and is a great car - good fuel economy and a fab chassis, but it isn't quick. Power upgrades are covered so many times on here, yes it is easy: exhaust, fuel pump, air filter and remap is good for 230-poss 240 and add a decat before the remap and it's around 250 ish. Remaps only from a reliable source - see site for details. You'll need to upgrade the brakes as the Impreza's are pretty rubbish compared to a Clio. I always thought my Clio was quick having encounters with Evos and Imprezas on track, but now I know they were not trying hard! Std Impreza is good for 60 in 5.5 secs, Clio in a fraction under 7.

You'll need a remap as mentioned above, i'd say it's a close call as to which would be quicker A to B on a twisty country road. Full decat, fuel pump and green panel filter should see you to 270/280 bhp on the standard td04, and a few handling mods and a geo set up and you'll be leaving the clio for dust.

I've had a Clio 182 cup and now have a WRX with the prodrive pack.
The Clio handles better as it should being a hot hatch and being nice and light. Engine wise the impreza is streets ahead. The Clio never really got going until 5250rpm or thereabouts when the cam changed. The impreza makes useful progress from 2500 rpm, max torque by about 3250 rpm and max power at just before 6000rpm. You don't have to rag it to get where you are going quickly.
Granted you won't get cruise control on the impreza like you do on the Clio (something that I miss) but like the man I bought the impreza from said, you don't cruise in this sort of car. You don't worry when you hear that snow might fall, it's sure footed in the wet and leafy autumn.
With an impreza you get pretty much everything - in my biased opinion

I've had four clios and they were ace. Phase 1 that I spent a few quid on. Then an inferno 182 which was such a nice car. Lastly a caged phase 2 which I should have kept tbh. I know I said four but the one before my phase 1 was boring as hell but that was some years ago after I'd owned two impreza's. I'm oddly on my fourth impreza and I do like it but if I'm honest I do miss the Clio, something about them. Performance wise my impreza is far quicker. Fun wise I'm not so sure.
Oh and depending on milage you do etc I would opt for a classic. A newage will not set your world on fire unless you pay the extra and get an Sti. The 215bhp will not feel that quick in comparison to what you have now.

Cheers for the comments guys, to the people that have said it'll be flat compared to the sport with 215bhp what would be the first mods I would be looking at to do to the WRX? And price wise?

Have a look at scoobyclinic (Google) they have some prices for different power gains. I am not saying this is the best way to go about it but it mite give you a bit of a idea what to expect and what you will need,ie bigger fuel pump etc.

Don't do it for anything less than an STI.
I drive a 182 daily and you'll cry when you realise how crap and slow a stock Impreza WRX is. Sure the Subaru will accelerate quicker and have better traction. But as for handling and and sheer fun the Subaru doesn't even come close.
I've got both and enjoy driving my Clio way more.

I agree with frayz.i had a 182 and thought it was a great little car.the standered wrx is painfully slow, has **** brakes and doesn't handle very well.if it was me i would keep the clio or save a little more and get an sti.

I had a 172 for 25k miles - it was quickish and tight and well equipped but it was just a pain having to work it all the time. Had far more fun in the Fabia VRS which replaced it.
I'm forced induction through and through and would have a WRX every day of the week due to the power delivery. It may be no quicker in the real world but it will feel it and if you do decide to mod........

Speed is one thing, I'm talking about handing, steering feel, feedback and all out excitement. The 182 chassis is superb, it's steering is alive and almost hardwires your hands to the front axle.
No Impreza I have ever driven has offered feedback like it.
I've got north of 570bhp in my Impreza with some of the best chassis, tyre damper setups available. In terms of bang for buck and excitement, the Impreza doesn't offer a driving experience anywhere near the Clio.
My 182 has both cup packs is 100% stock with the exception of track tyres.
That's it.
I'd say buy a Clio Trophy until you can afford either a well sorted RA or Spec C. The Trophy will hold its value too unlike the Subaru.
For the record, I've covered over 60k miles in my 182 now, and service it regularly. I've only ever had a Uego sensor fail on me once. I can't fault it's reliability.

I wouldn't say my 172 gave any more feedback or feel than my Scoob (uk t2000 - never driven a WRX) but it was ok. If anything it was the lack of weight over the rear end that bothered me although the car I sold for the 172 was an Elise so it never was gonna feel great after that.
