Flutter noise or chattering?
Hi guys and gals.
What is it that makes the chattering noise or fluttering as it's sometimes called?

So it's a blend between wastegate chatter and turbo stall ie air going back into the blades?
I assume as said this can shorten the life of the turbo?

The fluttering/chattering is the wastegate opening and closing on its spring loaded seat. Its there to prevent too much boost being created and damaging the engine - a relief valve in effect

As everyone is saying it is air passing the wrong way over the turbo. If you don't have your re-circ valve blanked then it is a sign the dump valve has failed. it needs repairing before your turbo eats itself.

Right so it is a bad thing?
Reason i ask is so many people tell me it sounds great, but i would rather find
out what damage it causes.
I have a stock 53 plate bug eye that chatters ever so slightly and it was concerning me that it was causeing damage.

WRONG.
It is the compressed air meeting the shut throttle body butterfly and been forced back through the compressor housing and out of the air filter thus trying to turn the turbo the wrong way.
It has nothing to do with the waste gate it doesn't even go through the exhaust housing. It also will not stall or stop the turbo, it will just slow it down a bit.
Wastegates are used for controlling the boost, but they make 0 noise UNLESS installed externally from the turbo(all standard scooby turbos have internal wastegates) an external wastegate goes to a "screamer" pipe and you'll never guess what sound that makes?!?! (Hint - its not chatter or flutter)
I have ran DVless on most of my cars and found no ill effects to be honest. It might **** your turbo, but it might not, you just take your chances, it has never bothered me.

I was making it easier for clarification of the noise that they make. I am well aware you can plumb them back into the exhaust, albeit you do loose some efficiency from this method as trying to join the two pipes in a smooth flow is hard.
