Default 2004 JDM 500bhp Target

Evening all,

Lets start with a picture:


I picked this up last Saturday from BIG FUD, who in turn got it off another member here. A smooth transaction I should add.

The car in its current state:
Litchfield LM450-S60 Turbo with billet wheel conversion.
Litchfield heatshield.
Litchfield 800cc injector kit.
Large FMIC.
Full Milltek stainless exhaust, partially wrapped.
Equal length headres with Afterburner up-pipe.
AP Organic clutch with Aztec 6.7KG forged flywheel.
Fuel lab regulator and gauge with ITP154 fuelpump.
Samco hoses.
Alloy crank pulley.
K&N airfilter.
BC Coilovers - BR series with remote adjusters.
Tein bonnet dampers.
Carbon Fibre wing mirrors.
Towing eye.
Front splitter.
Mudflaps.

The plan is to slowly get it to 500bhp, but first to (slowly, its very cold out there) sort out the suspension:

well i will drive the car until the internals let go which is inevitable with current turbo! although not like it actually gets used ever. my old type-r running ~330bhp got more use as the power delivery was road worthy.This certainly is not

The standard pitch stop is made of plastic and has large rubber bushes with voids. The new one is aluminium with poly bushes without voids. Its just a solid engine steady really - increases NVH but bolts the engine down a bit better. Hardly any difference on its own really.

I would look after your existing engine, and build another up alongside.

That way you'll have a sellable engine rather than a pile of scrap..

Unless you have loads of money to throw away, then forget the above.

I reckon you'll get some miles out of the standard engine even at 500bhp. They're hardy things the 2 litre JDM bottom ends.

Today I tried to raise the ride height back to standard (I don't care for low looks, I want to be able to have ground clearance for the impending snow) but the lower aluminium crown had seized. This was true for 2 wheels, then I gave up. To try to work them loose, I tried penetrating fluid, lots of it. Heating it mildly (fully aware that it is an oil damper so didn't heat too much) but it literally would not budge. Only way around this is to take all 4 shocks off the car and take the old adjuster crowns off in a nasty fashion, then replacing with new ones. That's an entire weekend right there so sadly the ride height will have to remain the same for now.

Looks nice, I wanted this one when Fud put it up forsale, but it snapped up toooo quickly.for me to get funds ready lol.

As Maz said, the JDM's will take more thwack then the UK lumps, 500bhp is probably borrowed time though, where as 450bhp is just as nice and much more affordable and achievable frpm what you have. That extra 50bhp safely will likely cost you an extra 5k.

Chances are, the boost will only be used for a few seconds per weekend! So far the commute this week and 0 boost, as engine only just gets to temp as I arrive to work. 15 mins

Well this engine has a few miles on it, so it would only be sensible to allow for a replacement, should you wish to use the power to it's potential..... especially if you're looking for 500bhp. However, why you would want to go through all of that for an extra 50bhp is beyond me if I'm honest.

This is not a short term goal. I enjoy playing with cars so as and when, I will upgrade. There should always be an end goal which for me is 500 bhp but if I dont hit it, I wont be too unhappy. This isnt just a figure chasing thread, this is just my project with a suitable title!

Sorry if I came across as being over the top in my post... I didn't intend to. It's just that many of us have been where you are now and many of us have ultimately regretted it! lol

At the end of the day it's your car and your choice. It's just personally I would question the "500bhp" bit, especially if it may ultimately cost you in either reliability or a new engine build for the sake of only an additional 50bhp... which is real terms is nothing at this level.

All imo of course.

Will be good to see where you take it on your journey and good luck with whatever you do.

The next step in the journey is a load of upgraded bushes / mounts from turninconcepts.com

Is there any difference between a JDM STI gearbox mount and a group N mount or are they basically the same?

Group N mount should be stiffer.

Be careful as depending on what you "uprate" with "what" you may remove compliance.

Really i would go route on yours with Methanol,this is really cheaper than going for bigger turbo,done on our one and we are before run 452.2bhp on V-power and now on 20% Methanol we are running 490bhp

Yes is mixed in tank and you should/can have on your ECU two fuel maps which will be easier thing

Second thought is as you are said via Aquamist or AEM Methanol injection kit,but if its worth not sure to do this way...I'm pretty scare using these system due i've heard few horror stories about the pump failed on these systems,maybe now using better pumps,but before has been few problems on those systems


And finally if its worth,you are running similar turbo like we are(just we are running Single scroll and you have twin scroll LM,but both using same turbine wheel from Turbo Dynamics) and gain 38bhp and more than 50lb-ft its worth for extra hassle

Well tonight I installed some new rear speakers; Apline SPG-10C2:





Here is the door card removed:



And the new speakers installed:



They are a vast improvement over the old crappy ones! Here is a glimpse of what is to come for the fronts:





Nothing too exciting but I do like at least a semi-decent sound to emit from the speakers I also received a few parts to keep me busy for the next few days:

BC coilover lower locking rings as mine have currently siezed so I cannot alter the ride height of my car. That wont be a fun job!



New STI key blank for no reason other than shiny shiny!



Mandatory french helicopter sticker which has been fitted to every car I have ever owned:



Some wax for the body and wheels:



I went for poorboy's world wheel sealant and collinite 915 based on reviews from a popular detailing website. Not too expensive, readily available from ebay and pretty effective, so I hear.

I have also just placed an order with TiC (http://turninconcepts.com/) for some tasty bushes. Lots of them! My first big task is to eliminate all bushing play and get a rock solid drivetrain - something I really can't stand! I will fit each part then test it individually to get an accurate conclusion for how effective each part is. Thats all for now

Im not an ICE fan either. But when i'm stuck in a traffic jam (which seems to be happeniong a LOT more these days than it used to) I need something to do. In days gone by, I would strip the entire ICE system out of the car to save weight. lol. Ridiculous when I think back to it really.

I might do - I did to my last scoob but its a right PITA to do. I still have the dynamat left as I ordered about 3times too much last time. Depends if I get the motivation to do something so tedious as that

Well front speakers went in OK. I used SAK-3001 corsa 03/93 130 / 170mm converters for the mid's up front, though Really they weren't required. With some slight fettling of the new speakers, the existing aperture in the door would have sufficed but as I already had the converters, I used them. Nice and sturdy!

Second to that I decided to remove the front splitter. Went for a blast yesterday and could just hear some slight scrapes where it must be touching down the B roads. Clearance was roughly just over an inch with it fitted but now I have more like 3. This will have to do until I sort myself out and adjust the coilovers.

Oh, a note to self: NEVER install components ever again. Rears took 30 mins, fronts took 3 hours. Not worth it in a car like this!!!
