Impreza space-framed 205 - design
I spend a lot of time sat in front of a computer fiddling with buttons all for the benefit of others. I was in the process of doing a GC8 time attack style shell and have it painted and ready for assembly, but an overwhelming amount of bordom for the project came over me as it wasn't an original concept.
So......I came up with the idea above and spent a few hours knocking out initial designs and stress testing on Solidworks, (my favourite design suite).
The design concept is, instead of fitting a 600bhp motor to a 1100kg car, why not fit a 330bhp motor to a 550kg approx car. Then potentially go and fit a 600bhp motor instead! Better than supercar speed, surely a no brainer!
This is the major cockpit space frame potentially, still needing some more panels and a front and rear space frame and panel mountings.
Very interested in constructive debate about this, has this been done? I love a good bit of engineering!

It's likely to be a mixture of fibreglass and sheet steel, carbon fibre is expensive and unecessary as far as I'm concerned. Most publically available carbon panels are carbon covered fibreglass anyway!
At 550kg and 330bhp, it calculates to be 610bhp/ton, 2.4s 0-60 and sub 10 1/4 mile. All i'd need to produce these results would be a FMIC, filter, fuel pump and 440 injectors on the phase 1 closed deck I've got sat at the back of my garage!
Build a fully forged GTX3076r motor and 600bhp becomes 1108bhp/ton, 1.6s 0-60 and 8.2s 1/4 mile, (all approx).

Could be a nice collaboration with Daren (ABW) then. One builds the go fast bits and one builds the uber lightweight fibreglass body.

Hmmm, I wouldn't mind that, or perhaps any body made out of fibreglass! Do you have some solutions/ideas perhaps?;-)

I should mention at this point I am very happy for anyone, individual or traders to get involved in the project once an idea has been finalised. Of course those individuals would get to drive/passenger ride and or use for promotion events etc should they wish and or is applicable.

Are you going to use FEA simulations on solidworks to test its strength and ridgidity? As a roll cage it looks good but as a complete chassis I'd think the suspension mounting need to be stronger and there should be some from of front crash structure as well as engine, diff, mounts etc?

I've already got in my garage a V4 type R dccd box which I've fitted front and rear Kaaz lsds to. All the hubs shafts etc to go with them. Front Brembo 330mm and rear 290mm 2 pots. Spec C quick rack, front and rear 24mm ARBs, Apexi N1 coilovers with my own springs for the chassis, all left over from the time attack build. Oh and of course a hydraulic handbrake!
Engine wise I have two CDBs, RCM omega pistons, EngineMapper rods, EngineMapper ported v5 heads, Crower stage 2 cams, Crower springs and retainers, CDF vernier pulleys and that's all I can remember right now.
So the idea was build the spaceframe with all the dccd drivetrain assembly, fit a standard V1 CDB engine and run mildly tuned for initial test and run of the car. Then move to a fully forged build.

Ahh right, sorry didnt read that bit properly. What exactly is it you do? As in whats is the company you do this sort of thing for? I live in North Wales and have property in Mold but am also studying Motorsport Engineering at Oxford Brookes University where I had to design a chassis last year using SolidWorks.

No problemo, I like just looking at the pictures too!
I'm a sole trader, did a degree in computer science and then in motorsport engineering also. I started off just helping out with set up work at a few local businesses whilst also stage rallying, (hence how I got to know them), moving on to design and a bit of fabrication. I've spent the last few years being a jack of all trades, from chassis design, modification, fabrication to engine development and mapping for all sorts of companies.

oh right thats pretty cool, sort of the way I want to go when im done. Just play around with all sides of motorsport, Im slowly building an Impreza track day car but Uni gets in the way of it. Ive been doing some CFD of a basic Impreza shape this year just for abit of fun and using other programmes like ADAMs and Ansys which are both useful for designing chassis and suspension components. Keep it up, I may have to come and pay a vist when Im back in wales.

I'd probably go with as small turbo as possible without stressing it too much to aid in spool. I like the revvy 2.0 / 2.1 over the 2.5. So probably something like a 321 series? Would also be front mounted.

Set the engine back in the bay to aid weight distribution and also mount slightly lower down if only being used on track to lower centre of gravity.
Drivetrain for me would be a 6 dccd speed set up with triple plate clutch. Seeing as Duncan has been running almost 600 in his TA car for quite a while it's lasted well so a proven set up.
Brake wise would probably be the standard Brembo calipers with a set of ds2500s bitting onto a set of 330mm grooved disc / bell combo. I wouldn't go for an overkill setup because of the lack of weight.
BC race coilovers or Exetc track setup
I'd like to keep it looking as standard as possible from the outside for the element of surprise. Clad the space frame in a fibreglass shell. Classic shape or blob eye.
So if anyone would like to fund my build or point me in the direction of an easy bank to rob or tell me how to become a leading banker or even an mp so I can get it all on expenses, that'd be great
