Default 2.1 stroker gt3040 classic project

Hi all thought id start a project thread for the car im currently building.

It started of with me buying a my94 v1 sti in january this year.
After going to look at the car with the mother of all hangovers and in the freezing cold snowy conditions i bought the car not really looking over it very well, BIG MISTAKE!
I took the car to have a pre mot check as it had a short mot and it was found it had been in a serious front end collision and was mangled beyond repair!!.
I tried to get hold of the guy i bought it from, He must work for m15 as he has vanished, his phone number was cancelled and the address on the v5 didn`t tally up with the flat number he was supposedly living at!.
Im a kipper and iv just been stitched im thinking .

Anyways, i managed to secure myself an my97 catalunya shell from a good man (jondav) on here, the shell came with the chargespeed wide arch kit which i loved the look of.......

Hence project phenoix, well hopefully it will rise one day lol

Few pics to accompany the story so far

The 94sti in my friends workshop all ready to be stripped for bits needed for new shell.

Few pics of the damage i found while stripping it.

The drivers footwell had at some point been pushed right back in by the front wheel, the drivers sill was bent and distorted, and i didn`t notice any off it.
The robbin bstards had even bodged things to make it drive straight...oh well ill live and learn i suppose, my fault for buying with my eyes closed

And a few pic`s of the stripping

Heres a few pics of the catalunya shell before i picked it up

I was originally just going to put what i could from the 94 over to the cat shell to get a car up and running, but, it never happens like that does it.
The wiring looms are different as im going to use my v1 sti engine as a base i had to swop looms, i set about removing total loom from the 94 shell and labelling it all up ready to swop over.
I then decided to totally strip the catalunya shell, sound dedening and every thing, im now putting the 94 loom into the cat shell.

I then decided sod it im going for a big power build and secured myself these ready for when the engine work starts.

A set of crower H section rods and cp racing pistons with rings

A hybrid fmic

These will be hidden away till the shell is ready for the engine build.

A bonus i got with the shell is that it was almost totally polybushed, all suspension joining parts are, the arms, the lat links etc even the diff carrier and cradle, i will source decent arbs drop links etc.
I also have coming a very rare set of original sti showa gas shocks next week
I was going to go with some kind of coil over set up but will try these.

A few pics of how things stand at present progress will be slow as im only really working on it at weekends.

The cat shell with the chargespeed kit, i also got some innovit 18" wheels

I will keep you all updated as progress..well progresses i suppose lol

I agree mate a very roundabout way of doing it lol.
I enjoy it though and have wanted to build a big power car for years, i would love to be able to build something that would be competitive in say the time attack series, to know iv done most of the work myself, well with the aid of a mate would be awsome, plus seeing as iv never even done a track day to date could also be rather interesting lol.

Spelling mistake rectified by the way ta

Thanks mate.

White wheels should look good, although im thinking of going matt black with the car so may have a colour change on the wheels to, will have to experiment when get to that stage.
read through your thread mate, looking good so far, may have to compare notes along the way lol

Right i now iv already put some pics up of these but mine arrived today and they look ooo so nice and shiney.

Iv spoken to alan at engine tuner about my build and iv decided on a built 2.0l, the rod and piston combo iv got is good for around 650bhp at the fly. The pistons are 0.5 over size so each bore can be hone matched to a specific piston.
Im going for a new ej20 crank with acl race series bearings, i may go for a 14mm head stud conversion for extra strength, will see what alan recomends when i take the engine up to him, cosworth head gaskets etc etc, it will be a few months from now though.
I need to dissasemble my block and see exactly what iv got, im hoping i have a closed deck block if not i shall be sourcing one.
Im thinking of possibly going with one of alans s206 turbo`s, and im looking into fuel delivery systems, i shall be using a 255 intank with a 044 inline swirl pot setup feeding parralel fuel rails and what ever injectors are decided upon.
Managment wise i shall be having a word with duncan about the syvecs system, iv got a few things i`d like the ecu to do so will see if he can work his magic when the time comes.

After all this i want to be able to run the car at around 400bhp untill either i can afford a new gear box or the current ones gives up the ghost, which ever falls first, knowing my luck it will be the latter lol, i will either go 6 speed or a strong 5 speed and map to as close to 500/500 i can safely get.

Im going for whitline arb`s front and rear and supporting drop links etc to help with handling, for the stopping side of things i will go for the k sport 6 pot 330mm fronts and subaru 2 pot rear upgrade.
Id also like to look at an aqua mist set up for safety reasons as i will be uber paranoid about anything going wrong with the engine lol.
Iv decided on a matt/satin black paint job and want to keep the interior of the car as standard as poss albeit with the gauges etc i need.

Anyway im off to my mates workshop tomorrow to carry on with the loom and other bits and bobs so will update some more when poss.

Just infuriating to see what your front end looked like under closer inspection. The seller needs to go to prison. Closely followed by a long hard bumming by Winston.

Back to the car though, gotta love that widebody mate, good luck with the project!

Im just thinking along the lines that he has obviously made a few notes from you on top of what he bought it for, and probably thinks its now quite a lucrative business to be in. Some poor buyer might not look deeper before being folded into a steel souffle at 50mph.

I did report him and his actions to the relevent authorities, to be honest if i hadn`t of taken the car for the pre mot check i would of never of known untill the actuall mot.

Done a few more hours today.

Got the wiring loom in and almost complete, can start getting the heater matrix etc back in next visit, all wiring now in engine bay.
few pics.

We also decided to make a start on the body work, my drivers door at some point had been knocked and filled, badly, so we got to work on that and a few other small dents, the rest of the car will get the same treatment before being resprayed.

Its getting there slowly lol

Also today i found i had to swop accelerator pedals as the my94 had a micro switch at the top of the pedal which went to the loom and the my97 didn`t?
strange, anyone know why?.

Not updated for a while so thought i`d pop a little one up, not alot to report really just getting little bits and bobs sorted, still got odd little wiring jobs to sort, ie finishing of the wiring for new fuel system going in.
Picked up the suspension for the car this morning, got a set of the apparently really rare showa sti shocks, heard good things about the set up and hope it should be perfect for what i want from the car, along with the complete polybushed chassis i have and the whiteline arbs drop links, under brace etc etc the car should handle very very well.

Quick pic of the showa`s, gonna give em a refurb before fitting just to get them looking like new.

After looking up the part number on the sti catologue the shocks are recommended by sti for gymkhana.

Getting there mate, just trying to decide on turbo choice now, as i want alan jeffry to do the engine work i think ill go for one of his s206 units, i want to run as close to 500/500 as i can get, "safely" maybe less if im pushing the engine to the point of being unsafe.

Have not updated for a while as have not really had time to do anything on the car for a couple of weeks, had a busy day today though and got a fair bit done.

The sti showa shocks are now fitted, they seem to sit very close to the wheels though, will have to keep an eye on this no pics of the shocks as my cam is dead and cant find the lead, had to use my phone for the rest of the pics.

Got the dash in and almost connected up, although, iv got some plugs that seem to have appered from no where as i cant for the love of me find where they went lol, will have to check the wiring diagrams again

Dummy fitted the charge speed kit today as well, the rubbing down and spraying is going to start soon so wanted to make sure all was ok.

Like the black fmic......

I cant decide spoiler......

Or spoiler-less...

Opinions people

Also i think im going to need some wider wheels, or a set of spacers

Rear

Front

Coming along now, seeing it like this has given me a burst of enthusiasm, i must admit i had been thinking about throwing the towl in....not now.

Done a few hours this eveing and haven`t really updated in a while, been rubbing down the car ready to spray and doing other little bits and bobs.

Iv sprayed the rear bumper and boot lid tonight.

Bumper baking in the sun

Sprayed front grill and wing. indicator will either be crystsal or black not decided yet.

Got a carbon fibre bonnet, going to rub it down and re-laquer it to get it spot on.

And a couple of shots of things dummy fitted, excuse pannel gaps nothings fixed in place yet lol.

.

Also found a dash mounted 60mm triple guage pod that actually looks nice on the pre faclift classic dash, well i think so anyway lol, will get some pics up when fitted. Will be getting more sprayed at the weekend and some other bits done so should have another small update then.
