Default MY99 STi

I wasnt sure of where to post this, but thought here might be best suited...

I've had MY99 STi since Aug09. It already had a Simtek and full decat. Since then I've had a VF34 and now for the purpose of this thread... I've had the following parts supplied and fitted by Harvey:

GT2 FMIC
TD05 18G clocked turbo
3-port boost solenoid
Nismo 550cc injectors
K&N induction with silicon inlet tract
Inlet manifold spacers

I have since replaced the inlet tract with a Lateral Performance one out of personal preference. It has no outlets on it. All thats needed now is an oil catch can... I'm currently on the group buy for one

I've had the car mapped by JollyGreenMonster and was very pleased with his mapping. However just recently I've had the oportunity to have the car mapped by Bob Rawle which was organised by Harvey I'm extremely happy with how its now running, however I cant drive it due to a current driving ban, but so very lookin 4ward to gettin behind the wheel once its over

Next I've got planned, Harvey up-pipe and ported headers and removal of the brake bias valve... almost 4got... I've got a brand new set of 356mm discs all round on DS2500 pads with red KSport front 8-pots and rear 6-pots

This is by no means the end of the modifications, I've got so much planned - I'll keep this post updated!

Thanks for looking

I have not had the chance to get it on the rolling road yet, but I've had a few cars running different proven power and it feels around the 350... possibly 360bhp mark. I will update as soon as I get the actual figures

In one scooby I've had a VF35 and this one b4 the 18G I had the VF34... I gotta be honest now... I'm never going to bother with anything less than the 18G again!

I've always liked the power from the VF34/35, but so soon after it leaves you wanting more... the 18G is an amazing turbo, far far superior than the VF's. So much power its actually frightening on most roads

If you want my honest opinion, dont even waste your money going for the VF34/35, get the 18G or 20G if you got the money for internal mods etc

And thats the reason I went 18G not 20G... the 20G will put so much stress on a std engine (and gearbox/clutch) that its borrowed time b4 she goes bang! Alot of ppl will probably comment and tell you they have no trouble running a 20G on std internals, but its a BIG risk and the 18G is a much safer bet b4

Thank you for the heads up, but I'm going back to Harvey for his tested and developed up-pipe and headers.
Bob Rawle mapped a car then the guy went and had the Harvey up-pipe and headers put on... Bob was called in again to remap the car and didnt believe the guy when he said he'd only had that mod... Bob then called Harvey to ask what else was done to the car as he couldnt get his head round how much better the car ran from that mod alone.
Apparently spoll up kicks in up to 500rpm sooner which is alot! And obviously the gas flow is totally altered... its a mod I'm very keen on having Harvey do

The main thing im stuck with at the minute is the choice of either 18g or 20g, and also not wanting the box to go pop! I have the same year STi as you, just got a GT2 frrom Harvey, looking for a decent set of injectors....then turbo! I take it the turbo is one of Harveys aswell?

The turbo is from Harvey, its ported and has an uprated actuator... it was around £600 brand new, but worth every penny!

Harvey also supplied me with the Nismo 550cc injectors... I was advised not to go for 640's as the 550's were the ones to go for at this level.

From what ppl I've known have experienced from wacking on a 20G without doing some serious mods to engine internals... it all ended the same way - BANG... then ££££££ rebuild

A 20G is good for 400bhp and the std 5 speed box and clutch will be dead in no time at that power, unless you're one of the lucky few that manage to run with no problems, but its alot to gamble on in my opinion.

If you got an endless pot of money and wanna do some serious heamoraging of money then go for the 20G with all supporting mods, but if you want a very nice chunk of power for a fraction of that cost and no need to rip apart the engine etc... 18G I highly recommend it

Tell ya what mate... give Harvey a pm or call and have a chat with him, he knows his stuff and can advise you very well

I've already been chatting to Harvey about this, he said similar, 18G and no probs, 20G, ok depending on driving style.

I've already had to fork out for an engine build on mine, which I uprated the internals, then the gearbox went last year which was rebuilt to standard sti5 spec, so its just the gearbox really to worry about if I go chasing lots of power.

Have you got a standard clutch fitted, or gone for an uprated one? Also approx how much were the injectors, as they seem to be so expensive everywhere

cheers

I've got the std clutch in at the mo, but I'm expecting it to go and when it does I'll be lookin at an Exedy organic one like I used to have on my 200sx. It was great at handling 350bhp and it was still spingy and not like pushing a slab of concrete thru the floor as with most paddle clutches.

Expect to pay circa £500 for a new set of 550cc side feeds mate... but you can pick them up on here 2nd hand for half that price - I was looking at a few 2nd hand along with 2nd hand 18G, but for the extra I thought get brand new... few extra £££ wasnt gonna kill me after the amount I've already thrown at it, lol

If you got the internals uprated then I reckon you should go for the 20G, but you may need bigger injectors and definately an uprated clutch.

Just dont launch it and the box might hold out... altho you might wanna start a seperate savings fund for a 6 speed while you wait for your 5 speed to destroy itself, lol.

6 speed boxes with rear diff's etc with the DCCD are circa £2500

Yeah I keep hunting in the classifieds for 2nd hand jobbies, but will most likely end up buying new, as bad as it is I dont trust half the stuff that comes up for sale on here!

I would like the 6 speed, or even better go PPG to keep the ratios, but costs a fortune...so I think i'll get saving

Got a few weeks to decide on turbo, but should be interesting! Good luck with not being able to drive it at the moment, would kill me after having all that done!!

Its painful and I'm counting down the days and hours...

The PPG box sounds brilliant with that whinging noise and you can slam it thru the gears - but thats around the £4k region if memory serves correctly... ouch!!!

Good luck Ozzy, hope the right bits come along... have a think about an MD321, they're sexy tubbies!

I have indeed considered an MD321, but I think a 20G will keep me happy for almost half the price, well hopefully anyway!

Atleast its only down to days and hours now, and you've got something decent to jump back into!!!!

I couldnt be happier with the 18G so I think the 20G will put a very big smile on your face for a very long time!

Also they can be run without a dump valve so if you like turbo flutter then you're in for a real treat!

glad you managed to get Harvey and Bob to sort the map for the new inlet pipe.. not easy to tweak it when you unfortunatly can't drive it.

Harvey invited me to come up so we could work around that alternative inlet tract I went for. Bob was there mapping a couple other cars and took a crack at mine after.

Its very unfortunate not being able to drive it and only able to go on what others say about how it drives

Altho on the plus side, the friend I had drive me there and back (4hr drive each way) was having the time of his life all day long

Fortunately Alex has an enthusiastic friend to do that at the moment, great spending time on it Alex, unusual example of that model year, you don't often see them in white. Given the number of Simtek using cars we had to map over the weekend yours slotted right in. Only one OEM ecu out of the six done.

cheers

Thats for sure... I could ring my friend up at anytime day or night and even if he was mid way thru pleasuring two virgin twins, I'm certain he'd run out the door with his trouser round his ankles, just to drive my car

It was great to meet you Bob and thanks again to Harvey for arranging that.

The car runs marvelous and I'm now itching to get behind the wheel... top job Bob many thanks

I have seen car's with 20G's running with the 440yellow injectors without any issues, I wouldn't say 550's were a definate must......

Agreed, but its always better to over fuel than under fuel and risk running lean. Plus it gives more scope for upping power with other supporting mods and not needing to change injectors at that stage.

I'm more concerned with reducing weight at the mo to increase power.

Better atomisation of the fuel at high pressure though....

What kind of power are you going to be aiming for? Will be keeping an eye- already looks good!
