2.2 Legacy engine into my 1967 Splitty camper
Hi, I'm new to this site but you will have no doubt seen me on many others.
I am going to transplant the engine from this -
2.2 1996 Subaru Legacy bought for £350
into this -
1967 Splitty camper.
So far the SUBARU strip has gone to plan and I've managed to sell a lot of the parts and remove the engine and entire wiring loom.
Unfortunatley, I sold the complete steering column including ignition and key.
I have read that in order to do the engine coinversion, you need the ignition key and swith as it contains an immobiliser that is coded to the engines ECU. Is this true of my car or is this only true of earlier cars?
Unfortunatley, I do not have any contact details of the guy I sold it to, so I can't get it back. Am I screwed?

Great project.
I cannot answer your questions, but I would think the technicalities are correct. I think you can get around this though cheaply via an aftermarket ECU.
Others could give better info.

'Mine' would have a 911 flat 6 in it and transaxle, but it would be great to have one.
Nice thing is you can get lots of parts for them, just need a good MIG welder.
I know where there is an excellent body man on Snet.....

Well, the Legacy now looks like this.............................
I've stripped most of it out and managed to sell a bit so I've got my £350 purchse price back. I am massively impressed with the level of engineering on Subarus and the simplicity of evrything bar the bloody electrics.
Anyway, I've decided that, rather than **** around fitting the engine to the original rebuilt gearbox using adaptors and all sorts (gearbox rebuild will be £1000 upwards), I'm going to graft in the Subaru gearbox and suspension and have the engine midmounted.
Its gonna need serious modding to the rear chassis but but I might just make a new one out of 4x2 box section.
Fortunately, due to the engine being fairly compact like a good old VW unit, It won't sit much further forwards than the rear wheels and should give a good weight balance and hardly take up any internal space.
My main problem is going to be sussing out how to change gear.
Obviously I would rather not have an auto box, but with the engine between the gearbox and gear selector, I don't know I would get a manual to work... Any ideas appreciated.
Anyway more pics of the bus floor being removed ready for the body renovation-

I know someone who has done just what you are planning, but using a Turbo lump, he works at the Subaru specialists Zen Performance, and has a camper as a long term project. If you ask Paul (of Zen) very nicely he may be able persuade Tim (the camper man) to post you some pics

Here on projects section are 2 cars (mid engined Escort and a Porche 550 replica) each running a 4 pot turbo with gearbox converted to 2 WD.
Never seen a camper chassis before, conversion looks a snip to me.
4 x 2 IMHO is far to massive. When i did my hot rodding in the 70's/80's we always used 3'' x 1.5'' x 3mm (10SWG) wall box section for the main chassis and smaller/thinner for the outriggers etc. We ran USA small block Chevvy and other motors through that with no probs
The Escort project used the entire subaru frony clip suspension etc and is really neat. It will be just what you need! Take a look as I feel he did a cracking job along the old engineering addage:
If it looks right it probably is.
Bit like this:
Excellent project.
