Cool 2.5l short block

looking maybe to get one of these as the big end has gone . i know that the sti heads i have will bolt straight on to this, do the cylinder heads also fit this part?? i have a number of mods on the car already which will aid the 2.5 but are there any more that i would need?

it has so far:
TD05/06 20g turbo
550cc injectors
SX Fuel Pressure Regulator
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Helix uprated top mount intercooler designed for an sti 8
Blitz induction kit with custom heat shield
H&S 3" open neck downpipe (exhaust wrapped)
Equal length headers and uprated uppipe (exhaust wrapped)
Blitz Nur Spec r exhaust
Ecutek

the car also has:

Lateral Performance paddle clutch
AP 6 Pots with Godspeed 335mm grooved discs
Tanabe coilovers
Powerstation anti bump steer modification
Uprated rear anti roll bar and drop links
Knocklink sensor
Apexi avc-r boost controller

i know once fitted and run in it will need a re-map.
looking to get around the 400bhp mark.

thanks, simon

Hi Simon,

Do you know what power it was producing before the big end went?

What model car is it?

Good luck

Chris

Erm; 'Heads' are the shortened description for Cylinder Heads...

Besides a short block you are going to need:

New Oil Pump
New Oil Cooler (known as a Modine - it will be contaminated by bearing material)
New Head Gaskets
Cam Belt
Inlet and exhaust manifold gaskets

You are going to need to scavenge from your old engine (and thoroughly clean):

Sump
Oil pick up
Windage tray
Water pump and thermostat
Complete cylinder head assemblies and head bolts (consider getting ARP studs though)
Cam belt tensioner pulleys
Cam belt tensioner and bracket
Cam belt covers
Inlet manifold
Exhaust manifold
Sensors
Water cross pipe
Engine mounts
Fly wheel
All drive wheel and timing wheel

thanks.

so it will basicly bolt straight in and work?
are the oil pumps the same fit as the one on the engine now? i have seen roger clark do a modified one.

would an oil cooler such as this one be fine or can you recommend one?

where is the best place to get some head bolts from?
i know roger clark do some, 11mm is that standard the size?

Pretty much a straight swap for the 2 litre, but with different head gaskets

Thing to watch is the standard piston clearance in the EJ257 is a little on the tight side, and the standard pistons are not really suitable if you intend to run over 400lbft (or 1.4 bar boost). If you can stretch to it either get the bores honed to give 1 thou clearance or better yet change the rods and pistons for stronger ones.

The modified oil pump is a given, all that is done to them is a smooth bore oil pressure relief plunger to stop it jamming open, there are acouple of different ones available, but the one from RCMS is the most regualrly used

The 11mm diameter head studs are the direct fit ones, there are various different versions of the ARP's available, but the ones from Lateral Performance have been tweeked to Mark's specs to clamp the heads down slightly better.

Oil cooler wise the car has a standard oil/water cooler that sits between the oil filter and the block, this is the 'Modine' which will need replacing. An air/oil cooler is a good upgrade, but only if you are having problems with high oil temperatures on cruise (a problem on some highly tuned 2.5's)

Is there any compatability issue with the coolant cross-pipe from either phase 1 or 2 and the EJ257?

Yes, the EJ257 has an extra block breather that gets in the way requiring a PH1 cross pipe to be modified.

Yes, 400 of each is readily acheivable, just don't get greedy if you want it to last more than 7k miles!

If your intertested my plans have changed slightly, and I could be persuaded to sell my complete short engine, which has been honed to give 1 thou clearance on each pistons, and been assembled properly by Autosportif including the new RCMS oil pump, a new water pump, new modine oil cooler, oil pick up and sump fitted, ARP head studs and a set of metal composite gaskets, esentially, fit some heads, manifolds and ancilleries and you're ready to go, for 2k GBP (which is about 800 quid less than it cot me to have assembled )

when you say been honed, you've had the pistons skimmed 1 thou?
hardley seems worth it, 0.001" not a graet deal at all.

Nooo, not the pistons! You leave them well alone, I had the bores honed, and 1 thou is the difference between a piston nipping up on the bore, or having room to expand if you plan to use the engine outside of it's original deisgn perameters.

I guess you are mapping today?
Good luck and be sure to post on here your thoughts.
Very keen to see what you think of the mid range torque with the 20g.
