The search for more power.
In late october i decieded that after 5 years of owning my STI4 i was going to bite the bullet and try to squeeze as much power out of the car as was safley possible, i already had the usual mods, Apexi induction kit,hks hiper, hks headers, hks D/P,link ecu and a full RCM rebuild so a nice fresh engine to play with.
I knew the std turbo (vf24) was never gonna be big enough, so after alot of reaserch i got on the phone to Andy F and ordered a Td05/06 20g,next on the list was the i/c i really wanted to stick with a top mount but after looking at the prices of a good uprated top mount i was put off, (could'nt be bothered with the hastle of trying to fit an STI7/8 i/c)as luck would have it at the same time Harvey started a new Hybrid group buy so i added my name to the list, with the potential to flow alot more air the std fuel system was not going to cope so a walbro fuel pump was ordered along with a set of power enterprises 550cc injectors.
At the begining of december TweenieRob came round my house to fit the new turbo/injectors and fuel pump, before leaving he help me remove the front bumper ready for me to fit the new i/c which i did in 2 days, amazed how easy that was.
The 22nd of january saw me driving to swindon to have the mapping finnished by Bob Rawle after a problem prevented us completeing the job in late december.
And today i was booked into Engine advantage for a RR day with SIDC i turned up at 12.30pm and virtual drove straight on ot the rollers, to record a figure of,

To say i am pleased is an understatement, i've not stopped smiling all afternoon.

How much boost are you running ? Have you uprated the internals ?

If what you say is true, almost every 2.0 turbo diesel should be faster than a scoob, as they have more torque.
A peak torque figure at an engine speed so low you will rarely use it if actually driving the car properly is of no use for outright speed. Roru's car has a good spread of torque, and more imporantly it maintains the torque almost right accross the RPM range, where you're typical car with small turbo and high peak torque, has only a small proportion of it's peak torque available.
You will also note that the car was slipping on the rollers at peak torque, you can see the sudden drop in torque at about 4700rpm. If it had not slipped the torque would have been a little higher, and of course it would be higher again it it ran the boost on the rollers which it did on the road.

But here we have something with peak torque at about 4500rpm, which is real nice to drive, as when you change up a gear you are should have good torque available. But oodles of torque at 3000rpm, but not very much at 5000rpm is actually very dissapointing drive. You can put your foot down in 4th and get a rush of torque, but it rapidly becomes nothing, just like a diesel.

Thanks for pointing that out Paul, i thought that the torque figure was a bit low, i noticed the dip in the graph but did'nt think it as caused by slip.

Thanks Carl, i was going to start a project thread but unlike Graham and yourself i did'nt do most of the work myself, and i was worried that i would'nt reach my power target which was 350/330 so i'm very pleased.
I think i will leave it alone for a while and enjoy driving it for a while, although i'm so close to 400 , but i think that might be pushing the std internals a bit to far.

I'll be chuffed with a smooth running 350/330 for this year on the 5 speeder.
Those are great great figures; the car must be great to drive.....

Graham the car does drive very well, and to honest the lag is not as bad as i thought it would be about 1 bar at 3100/3200 only about 200 rpm more than the vf24.
Did you get your air leak sorted out?

Must find a RR in the west midlands (suggestions?) for a simple power run afterwards to see where I've ended up.
I know PE rr's gave me 314 bhp @ 1.25 bar on Optimax on a stock with decat system engine 3 years ago.
Surely with all that's been done I can expect my goal

There have been a few 2.0's running just over the 400bhp on this turbo on std internals, my own WRX RA, Alan G, Tweenyrob, Jonny Gav, John Banks, Steve Gatens just from memory !
In most cases they were running Optimax and NF octane booster to get over the 400bhp mark. Your power figure is spot on for 97 octane on a well prepared and properly mapped car.
I can see from the graph where it appeared to slip, it looks like a torque of somewhere between 330-340 would have been achieved

Wasn't sure if the turbo was gonna be to big for what i wanted 350/330, before i spoke to you i had it in my mind to get a straight Td05 but i'm glad i followed your recommendation and went for the 20g, having never had a 16g i'm not sure how much latter it spools but once it has . very pleased with it now.

I'm getting excited!
Did you run straight Optimax for those figures or was there a whiff of NF in there?
I'm sure Andy has stated that the addition of NF and a map tweek on the Commander will pop in another 5 to 10% power(?)
Think I must get some more NF from RCM this weekend.

Graham,
The run was on BP ultimate and that's all the car is mapped for, it's a 17mile round trip to my nearest shell garage and i'm not prepaired to go all that way for the sake of 5/10hp.
