HOW MANY 2.5 REBUILDS ARE OUT THERE NOW?
as title, and what sort of reliability is there so far.??
i have about 4k on mine now and have no regrets. ive gone thru 5 ej20's and decided the 2L just wasnt up to it. its still early days to determine long term reliability/quirks of the 2.5 but simple maths suggest that the extra 25% has got to increase the reliability factor...methinks!!

I would like to add a bit.
How many 2.5's are there out there that are running 400x400 and have not been stretched to 400+ bhp.so weakening the basic short engine.
I'm thinking of Dyney's straight forward engine. Simple build, max reliable result.
Even John Banks has settled @ 400x400 as the limit for worry free progress.

the thing thats enticing me G, is the fact that I have all the other supporting mods in place, so if I got one on GB then I would build it in readiness for if/when my ej20 lets go (or I get too impatient waiting), headers, fuel delivery, exhaust, engine management, breathing all done, just need the bottom end.
oh, and I dont want a 6 speeder so will be plumping for an stiV 5 speeder (1/4 the price as well
)

Aquired in September 2003, with same intention as Peanuts, except that went out the window in March 2004 when the 2.0l (360/340) died spectacularly.
2.5, with uprated internals went in the car early May 2004, with many other additional mods too. Between then and September, car was off road for more than 2 months on and off for various reasons like gearbox changes, but i still did 8000 plus miles before the head gasket said enough was enough.
That was running a Garrett GT30R turbo at 1.6bar though, so trying hard, and not simply settling for a simple 350/350 package, which would have been an almost repitition of the 2.0l, which was an EXCELLENT daily driver.
Engine is still in bits since begining of October, as i just dont have the enthusiasm to put it back together.

i've had my 2.5litre conversion since jan 2004
First 14000 km @ 1.25 bar
But it`s running @ 1.4 bar no problems jet ,but it`s burning a little oil
The headgasket is fine
power is 370 a 400 Hp ?
The turbo is a td05/06

customscoob; three engines in one car and one engine in two others. i personally know of 14 or more that let go. as we all know the subaru engines are a bit prone to knock and our absolutely $hite irish fuel doesnt help.
adam; im interested in feedback on any 2.5. really the point of me starting this thread is that in my personal opinion the reliability of the 2L is pretty sad. before anybody decides to slaughter me on that comment just spend a little time looking around at the many many failures in this forum and any of the other subaru oriented forums across the world.
i just feel that this thread will help those considering the move to a 2.5L. if the positive feedback continues then it would look like a very practical and cost effective way to get an even more enjoyable car back on the road. as i said before, this is just my opinion.

that depends on whether your using an ej257 short block to:
a) push the power further
b) keep the same power but dial in a lot more safety
c) increase the power a bit, but still hoping for more safety.

I still think it all comes down to if you are trying to max-out your engine.
Tweek a 2 litre to, say, 350x330 and an Sti based engine will live well IMHO based on good Optimax. You may get that engine up to 390x340 and BANG.
Do the same to a 2.5
400x400 is the reliable max (for the same conditions) but 500 x 440 and.....
There is also the chassis to consider.
A well modified chassis with 400x400 engine is about the limit for A/B road driving, and 500x440 the limit-ish for track/dragracing where failures are expected and of little real consequece except to the race position or wallet.
Strikes me that a good chassis with a 2.5 400x400 and a 6 speeder is perfect.
Better would be a tweeked Type C as the cost WILL work out to the same deal.

i ej257 pistons failed due to runing way too much boost i.e 2bar but started having problems at 1.6 bar then just went along toi see how it went .. now ive rebuilt it its going really well and with new compressor recon it will do 450 all day long np at all ... chris
