Default little one here. ej207 on std. internals (dyno graph added)

Hi there!

I´m looking for advice and I´ll be pleased if you can share your opinions with me. I also have posted a similar one in the Nasioc in order to ear as much opinion as available. (Feel free to move this tread if it is not considered a a 'project')

So here we go:

What I currently have is and Euro MY03 STi (gdble, ej207...) with a turbo-back, STi panel filter and a Walbro pump (this one not instaled yet). At this point the car should be around 300hp

Now speculations:

I was ready to do a Ecutek remap, when I started considering the possibility to also upgrade the turbo, in order to take advantage of the maping.

Then I was recomended to upgrade the air intake to a RAM air, and 'what turbo' question apeared.
Anyway what I have for shure is that I want to keep the standar internals.
The last point added to this ecuation is to install headers...

Intended use of my car:

Its a daily driver.
The side wich I want to improve in my car is to make as fast as possible in B-roads, Hillclimbing and so.
I dont mind HP, not the 1/4 mille times (wich doesnt mind that it would not be fantastic if the car performs well here).
It will be used 1 or 2 times a year in track events for fun, I dont want to brake any records, but at least I would like to be OK in this area.

What to do:
Here is where I am...
Headers/upipe, yes or no?
What turbo? 1820, avo400/450, td05/06 20G, Deadthbolt Kong/Kong2 or its Zilla equivalent , one garret GT series (or based in),... bigger one (like Green), smaller one, like a td0516G...??? I´m totally lost!!!
Note: Deppending on the turbo, injectors may be added.

Thanks!!

Time has passed, decisions taken and the 'project' seems to be near from being completed...

The final MY03 STi drivetrain set-up is:

Zilla TD05/06-20G
PE 800
Walbro 255
K&N Typhoon STi ram air
GTspec coated headers/uppipe
Catless Turbo Back Exhaust
Perrin Silicone Turbo Inlet Pipe
Perrin Pulley
Perrin EBCS
UTEC
98 oct fuel

The mapping will be performed next weekend by a friend of mine and I would like to know what boost targets can we aim to, considering that I want to take advantage of the full potetial of this turbo.

I'm also afraid of both bost creep problems as well as surge problems, any advices to avoid them or fight them if they appear?

Thanks!

Andy stretched my 20g/550cc injectors/Apexi FC to 1.4 bar from about 3800 to 6000.
The Commander handset has peaked at 1.51 at about 4800 (cold day).
inj duty cycle was in the 80+ % if I remember correctly.
This was Optimax and NF booster so about 98 Octane.
With a good number of simple external mods, the car gives 407 bhp/340 lbft torque.

To remind you, the car is an Sti V3, 1996.

Let us know how you get on!

Hi Graham!

How are you? as I have read you will have a funny weekend at Barbon/Harewood, isn't it? no mercy with those evos!

What was the limiting factor on your target boost? Inyectors? Engine internals/tranny?

Is suposed to be the STi V3 as strong as the MY03 STi engine (V7 I think)?

Is feasible to hit 1.45 or 1.5 bar tappering slighty as the redline is aproching? Or is it more reasonable to hit 1.4 bar ASAP and keep it till the redline?

As stated before, I want to take advantage of what this turbo is capable to offer... without breaking the engine/tranny in few weeks (if it is possible LOL).

Regarding to the fuel we use, I have found that our 'premiun' 98 is RON 98,0-MON 93,0 rated, wich I dont know how can be compared to your Optimax+NF.

Carlos:
The 1.4 max tapers off to 1.2 by the red line which is irritating but is possibly saving the Trans at the moment.
At first we thought that it was the big sports Cat i hade on the car, but the car is as quick without the cat!
Next theory is that the TMIC (Sti v8) is leaking; this has been known before on other cars.

It is going well enough now, and I'm in the heat of competition now, so I'm reluctant to mess about with it till July when there is a racing 'rest' (time for the 911 to come out!)

I will be comparing my times with those EVO's, but I have never raced at these two tracks before and they are regulars there

Will be a bit of fun. Must get some points!

Regards, Graham.

Oops...
Sorry!
When I answered the emails I had just done a 14 hour day, 320 miles and a big test session on one of my designs in Essex....I wish England was about 3 x bigger, or with 1/3 of the (car) population..

Not much hope for me this weekend at the Hill climbs

Graham.

Last weekend I was at the dyno and this is what I got (please note that along with my mine a graph from a stock STi is included):

Is it posible this graph to be ok considering that all the parts are instaled and that the defi boost gauge displays 1,4/1,5 bar (even with 1,6 peaks) in the longest gears during driving? (Note also that 1 bar is reached around 3200 rpms in the highest gears in spite of the conservative boost map in low rpms)

Please note that the maping is being done by ourselves and what we have by the moment is a rough map.

Hope to complete this post with some videos and audio files in order to check if what I ear from the turbo is surge as well as to check if the fluttering in the boost gauge is normal.

Will try to upload a log from the UTEC also.

308 hp are far away from what I can spect from this set up...

is that WHP or FWHP?

Are you still on standard injectors?

Mapping with the ECUTEK or something else?

The hp are 'at the crank' as long as I know. As you may apreciate the clear blue line represent the hp of a MY04 stock STi (wich is rated 265 hp in Europe) wich reached 269.7 hp whereas the dark blue is the graph from my car (307.9 hp)

Simon:

HP at the road wheels = WHP
HP at the flywheel = FWHP

Sorry if you had already got there

Graham.

Hola Carlos !

Sorry to say that the UTEC with the stock sensor once you pass a certain point only reads 'rich' or 'lean' instead the AFR number, and as long as I returned the Wide Band to his owner I can not read the real AFR right now.

Please note that we used a W/B when we mapped the car. Now I'm waiting my own W/B. As soon as I can, I'll upload a log from the UTEC.

Does the UK mappers use EGTs info to perform the maps? i.e. is really recomendable to install an EGT reading system in order to get the mapping done properly?
