I believe the STi5 intercooler can be made to fit.. but think the newage intercoolers are larger still and not going to be enough room if that is the case.

The 01-03 WRX intercooler fits just, but it touches the bulkhead slightly, and you have to remove the spot welds and then seal weld the bulkhead. Took bloody ages and now I've gone and bought a FMIC. You will also need to fabricate a bottom Y hose as neither fit.

You can fit the later Ver7 intercooler to the *classic* Impreza.
You need to adapt between compressor out let and the Ver7 "Y" pipe under the intercooler and make up a couple of simple brackets to support the intercooler on to the engine.
Ver 5 dump valve can be fitted but better off using the ver 7's dump valve as they don't line up the same.
Clearance is very tight and is very close to bulkhead. The larger cooler also hides the clutch reservoir, so would need to come off if you want to top it up (no big deal)

Finally...would recommend making adjustments in the scoop area as the size of the aperture is smaller than the ver7 intercooler, so air going in to the cooler is less than ideal
