Questions at the end

Find a chunk of aluminum

Mill it to required thickness my case 38mm wide (was meant to be 40 )

drill a hole in it and lathe to a 3degree pitch

I got a little carried away here (clocked it up to ensure holes got drilled in middle of plate)

Setout the holes (all looked ok at this point )

Drill and tap the holes

Grab camera again while drilling

Cut it to length now hole distance has been decided upon

TADAAAAA

different angle

Fit and finish (well almost)

A few modifications to Prototype No 2 will be required
spacing of holes, left to right was near perfect (see how neat the ringlet sits next to the next one).
However I balsed up the front to back measurement, only allowing 12.66mm instead of 15mm. Doh !
Oh and the reason I have only done three conections is......
6 holes...so bought 6 gold plated ringlets....DOH ! the cable has 2 ends

Andy

At the moment the ally is nice and bright but will tarnish. what do I do about corrosion protection ?
(sprayed with WD-40 as temp measure )
OK, could I have it anodised, will this reduce it's conductivity ?

Did the earth mod just with some 16' cable and simple connectors, works even like the expansive one, but anyway, nice handjob that you did on the millingmachine...

Has the mod improved the car in any way. Cold running etc? I'm thinking about this for mine as it is crap in cold weather.

Question

Looks great. Puts my tatty earth mod to shame.

Someone round here a couple of weeks ago said that he could do gold plating I can't think of a better use. You've gone to the trouble of this much overkill, so why not IMPROVE its conductivity and protect it from corrosion

How about making a shed load and selling them for £2 each - I'd have one

Seriously if you do decide to sell some I'd be interested.

In terms of corrosion why not coat it in the stuff which is normally on the battery terminals ?

Cheers

Red face

Naughty-naughty for holding the work in a 4-jaw like that (pic.4) Should have used a faceplate? (The photo is 90* out!) Engineering critisms over, it turned out ok! As I did a 7-point earth mod ages ago it would be good to finish it off with something like that.

Looks very impressive. A question though - wouldn't using a single 4 AWG lead from the negative going to a distribution block and then 'starring' from there have the same effect?

Unhappy

fuzz
nice neat job
but i hate to put a dampener on things,
i am an electrician by trade,,copper and ally dont mix to well when conducted with electicity, they corrode, quite badly infact,,

cant you get hold of any copper block to do the same job?????to stop it from corroding smear with coppa slip???
just an idea.
on my new car the earth mod i used this time was a large crimp(lug)with 6 of the wires all going into the same large hole and then i crimped it .
all the best mate

Roy/Fuzz,

Aren't those connectors gold-plated and not copper?

Like I said - a 6-way distribution Earthing block from a Car Audio Dealer - unless anyone can tell me why it won't do the same job?

MRK,
£££££ from car hi-fi dealer.

Those six GOLD connectors and 24m of 8swg cable cost £24..something (£20 cash as I know them )

Those that want one...
Are you looking for a "package" with all the cable and connectors
Or just the earth Block ???

Would need to find a cheaper source for the connectors and cable to make it competative I think ?? any ideas?

Also want to mod the block so that all cables tranfer out on the same side of the block, would need to re-position holes.
Prototype No 2 on it's way shortly

If I wanted an earth mod I'd rather buy the whole thing so get your business head on and come up with a kit price

I'd buy one as well

Looks good

I'd be interested in a kit price!!!
Is the prototype 2 going to have the connection holes ofset to each other? (Rather than in pairs)

Andy, Looks Nice...

You get better tools and better scrap at work than I get at home..

Most car audio terminals are Brass and not gold.. (im not on about you andy)

Alu. is a good conductor and most cables for power industry.. Ie 11kv cables are alu.. not copper.. (probably down to cost though!)

Still Nice.. but not my cup of tea..

I would still go for the same but on the chassis leg.. as I would rather have it look std..

How many earth points do you all want ?
Is seven enough?

1. Alternator.
2. Inlet manifold.
3. Right strut turret.
4. Left strut turret.
5. ECU support bracket.
6. Left front chassis Leg.
7. Right front chassis leg.

don't wan't to have to make them a third time

Got my eye on a full length of aluminum bar, it's just asking to be hacked up

Andy

edit as I can't count

nope, just a bit stuck in the evenings at the mo, waiting for parts to come in for a car job I have in the workshop. (snapped cam belt) doing this as a favour if he makes me a tool for making the degreed hole in this earth block everyone is interested in.
Tis a bit labour intensive, drilling it, then setting it up in the lathe, to put the degree on it..

Andy

P.s I hate friggin timing up diesel engines

p.p.s if you would like to have a go at putting something together of the RR day @ Powerstation that would be great.
could combine turboteeths footage too....
up to you, I'll bring you the original tape at the star meet in Feb if you like?

[rant mode on]
Just because I can afford an Impreza and have enough disposable income to buy mods, doesn't mean I like throwing money away. Why pay £100+ for someone else's kit when you can do your own for a fraction of the cost. What's the point of lining someone else's pockets If I had the tools and ability, I'd make up an ally block myself.

No offence, but it gets right on my nipple ends when folk say that. I can just here my Dealer say, "well if he can afford one of our cars, he can afford to pay more for parts and servicing".
[/rant mode off]

I was always told too spend your money wisely. The £90+ I saved will go nicely to my summer hols

Fuzz,

Top work m8. Lets us know the final costs and when you're ready to start making batches of these. I fancy one of the ally blocks myself

Stefan

P.S. I've already got all the cables and connectors on my car already, so it's just the block I need to tidy up the battery connection.
