I bought a good plate for £250 including transfer fee from the DVLA.

Retention means that I have payed 105 pounds to keep the no. plate. This means that when I sell it on to the next person they do not have to pay to put it onto their vehicle.
I am looking for offers in the region of 500 as this is a realistic value.
