Jaguar XJ8 Sports Auto Slipping in Gear
Hey all
A friends dad has got a 1998 Jag XJ8 Sport and it's his pride and joy but it's started slipping whilst in gear (auto box), any ideas what kind of price you'd be looking at to get this sorted? Any recommendations for the beds / cambs area?
Cheers

If it was mine l would look to see if a fluid and filter change was possible.
It may say sealed for life auto box, but always worth joining a Jaguar forum and getting a more informed opinion.
Could be a common fault with a cheap (ish) fix

My first port of call would be to replace the transmission fluid. Not an easy job as there is no dipstick or easy access filling point. A garage should be able to do it easy enough though and it won't cost a fortune.
If that does not cure it then it's possible you have the beginnings of transmission failure. These are a ZF box and do suffer from something called A drum failure. It can be repaired, but as most of the cost is in removing and reinstalling the transmission it may be best to fit a rebuilt transmission.
That said it won't be cheap and may be more than the value of the car!
Ali will hopefully be along soon as he knows a good bit about Jags.

Hey there thanks for the helpful info, I wasn't sure if I'd get any replies. I did read about this drum failure issue and it looks horrendously expensive if it is that, do you have any ideas on cost to rebuild to confirm? It doesn't look like you'd get much change out of 1.5-2k from what I've read (but I could hopefully be wrong) :-( he hasn't changed the fluid yet so will pass that on thanks again.

If he knows any competent mechanics whio might do him a favour then you could get the tranny out and take it for repair and then put it back in, but I really think you;re looking at £1500 if you need the job doing at a garage.
Search on the web as there is a thread somewhere of some doing this repair themselves, but it's not a job for the complete amateur!
