4X4 choice...
Looking to get a 4X4 in the next few weeks,
Scooby is out, as it's petrol btw
Narrowed it down to 2 but not sure on which, both have pro's / cons
1st - Pajero 2.8 Man L reg 110k non leather but clean
2nd Terrano 2.7 Man 04 reg 53K pov spec but clean and looks like no towbar
The paj is 2K cheaper than the Terrano,
Any thoughts?
Mart

Not an awful lot of experience personally with 4x4s but my mate used to have one for work as he sometimes needed to tow a lifting platform (industrial electrical contractor).
He had a sucession of Land Rover Discoverys but they eventually got too unreliable so he bought a Pajero .... did 210K in it and outside of a few little niggles it never missed a beat.
He also used it to tow a Terrano out of one of those 4x4 day events when it got stuck.... mind you that may have been the driver rather than the vehicle!
As he said the Pajerio was a bit basic in terms of extras etc. but it kept on going and ultimately that is what he wanted it for!

Had both a pajero and a Terrano.
All depends what using it for, the pajero will be better on the motorway than the Terrano. Anything over 60 in a Terrano and its feels bad.
Terrano will be mechanically simpler than the pajero, no superselect 4wd to go wrong. But wont be able to drive the Terrano on the tarmac road in 4wd.
Both suffer from rust issues, may be worth checking the pajero has underseal on, as I'm guessing its an import with you calling its a pajero ! Both suffer from sticking 4wd systems if not been used a lot. Check when rear diff oils swapped etc
Both should have LSD at rear
If dont need to use it on the motorway / can cope with 60 mph on motorway I would choose the Terrano, newer, less miles, less to go wrong etc

Shame about the age restriction as a good 200 Tdi Disco or Defender are tough as boots and can run on neat veggie oil (used at that). Mine had 166k on it when I sold mine and I utterly regret it. Made mincemeat of the snow out here in the sticks.

it does depend on what the car is needed for
if just pottering around locally, with a bit of off-road - i would go for a Pajero
the 4x4 system is quite clever and can be run in 2WD most of the time then you can select 4x4 at upto 60MPH if needed
i like the look of them too - uber pikey, people give tend to give you a bit of room too

I have an Isuzu Trooper 3.1D SWB and can't sing it's praises highly enough, sits at 90mph on the motorway all day long and has done so quite a few times for 1200 miles at a time, never missed a beat only fault in 8yrs and 70,000 miles was clutch and a slave cylinder sorted for £160 diy.
2 wheel drive (rear) most of the time switch to 4 high on the fly up to 60mph in the wet and low ratio / lock off road but you need to stop to do that.
It had a hard life for the first 5yrs, 10 mile Paris Dakar style driving almost everyday out here in Croatia, it's been in some pretty serious bogs and seriously tractor rutted lanes and has taken everything I have thrown at it, even been on it's roof and took out a couple of decent sized trees while I was at it too, had no problems towing a twin wheel 4 berth caravan across europe and still did 60+ mph up the hills in Switzerland and i'll not say how fast down them.
It was doing 110mph in Germany on the autobahn on the flat (without a caravan) but it get's a bit juicy at 4k+ rpm other than that it will see around 28/30 mpg normal driving and a bit more if you stick at 70mph, it will do 500 miles to a tank full with change to the red light, doesn't like really steep hills with less than a quarter of a tank though.
Only comes out to play in the snow for the last couple of years, last outing was to pull a mate out of a field in his 300 tdi Land Rover 110.
If you can find one you won't be disappointed.
I avoid Mitsubishi apparently they have a bit of a rep for sometimes costly pain in the **** electrical gremlins.
Edit to add; The Nissan 2.7 lump is quite thirsty too.

Diesel Fozzy has been fantastic for the last year.
Bought it with 120,000 on the clock at under £6k!!!
Travelled down to London to buy it, as the Chelsea Tractor of choice must be the Range Rover down there .
Drives and feels just like an impreza, but gives 50mpg if easy on the gas pedal.
Unless you need the extra size & weight for towing large vehicles I'd recommend this every day of the week!

Just to say, only rubbishing freelananders boot space! No idea 're reliability, capability
If I had a choice of car not restricted by the government I'd be sniffing round real range rover or discovery.again,no idea of capability, just look so good
