Default E39 M5

Anyone own / owned one of these? Maybe a bit dated now but still look like a lot of car for the money.

Stu who runs the site has or had one. A few others too. They are excellent cars and still very capable, but the E60s are getting very affordable now too.

I nearly bought one when I went for my first Merc, they do drive exceptionally welll even by today's standards and don't feel like a big car at all.

E60 for me, they are a world apart in terms of performance. I think about the only area the E39 outperforms if is fuel economy

Was a great car when it came out and quick too but I personally feel that most of the German saloons of that period have dated massively as the game has moved on so far since then.

But the E60 is cack in comparison to the E39...

Faster is the only thing the E60 has going for it.. Its the bad egg of the 5 series world, born out by how much they are now worth..

I was offered an 2005 M5 for under 10k with just under 80k on..... Still knocked it back. The engines failing,£3000 clutchs, and SMG packs failing are scaring people to death.

If the E60 had a manual gearbox then it would have been a better car..

Shame..

This is what puts me off, I've heard too many horror stories with the E60. I'm sure there are plenty of good cars out there but it's finding one.

I know the E39 can have problems but at least repairs are within reach of a diy'er or good specialist.

I had a e39 M5 for around 8 months- read too many forum horror stories and sold it, in those 8 months it was a fantastic car with no problems at all, really heavy on juice so beware if its a DD.! paranoia got the better of me

gutted

I also went to test drive a CLK55 AMG yesterday- nice car but the AMG disk are £500 EACH.

I'm going to buy another classic as a 2nd fun car now
