Default Best SUV/4x4 for under £30k?

In the market for a new car for the wife.

She wants a medium size 4x4 with plenty of room for the two kids.

Honda CRV seems to receive a fair review.

Any other suggestions / advice?

For 30k....or under

Range rover
Mercedes ML
Vw q7 / q5 etc...
Audi

Don't think you can compare a honda to the above....

Nissan Juke Nismo looks cool, but doubt it's what you want!

May I ask why you need a 4x4 though? I hope she isn't going to be one of those mums driving a single child to school each morning in a whopping 4x4, who will never use the 4x4 ability...

Honda CRV probably won't break down. The rest are reasonably likely to or cost a lot to keep running but will feel more luxurious.

Consider leasing even if you have the cash. If you find a good deal it could genuinely be cheaper and less hassle.

CRV if you're over 60..

New Suzuki SX4 cross looks interesting, not seen any reviews but other Suzukis get good press. The Kia Sportage gets decent reviews and is pretty funky. Best of the mid sized 4 x 4's in my view is the Nissan Qashqui.

The X Trail is far better than the SquashMe. Worth a look.
Grand Vitara is work a look as is a fairly entry level X3.

Do you need to go off road or not? Most SUV / are 'faux wheel drive', i.e, useless off-road.

I’d pick a Rav4 or Xtrail over a CRV tbh. The wife has a 8yr old Rav4 and its been bullet proof. Make sure you check as a lot of the lower spec models are only 2WD.

I quite like the look of the VW Tiguan (sp?) but the engine options are rather lack lustre.

As you say medium size I guess X5 / Q7 are too large so I would say X3. The F25 looks far better front and back imho – almost a mini X5 but then they are still relatively new. You might be able to get a nearly new F25 20d for low £30k’s.

You'll be able to get a new BMW X3 xDrive30d SE in budget with discount.

Not what the OP is looking for but Just bought a used SX4 SZ-L, it’s at the cheaper end of the scale for the cross over type cars. Well put together with the exception of some plastics, doors have a nice solid clunk.

Had a look at the new S-Cross in the showroom, not sure on the frontal styling looked a little squashed, presumably done for the pedestrian impact protection. Rear headroom was also very poor.

Save yourself a few £ and get a Skoda Yeti (in 4WD form), rave reviews and supposedly even capable of a bit of rough stuff.

New Qashqai due out in next year.
For 25k you will get a top spec mid range 4x4. No one has mentioned the Kia Sportage / Hyundai IX35. The Sportage being the better looking one.

Wife has a Sportage which is a very good Spec but it is a £24k car and does feel cheap.

For £30k I'd want a 1 year old X3 with a good spec.
