Volvo S40/V40.

£2K will get you a 2004/2005 diesel. Bullet proof but a bit dull!

I was looking for a Focus estate and chanced upon a V40 1.8 petrol 2003, 100K, FSH.... £1K Best £1K I have ever spent. Done 10K in the last 9 months, hasn't missed a beat. Would never have even looked at one if I hadn't seen one next to the Focus I was looking at (which was a bag of crap btw like most Focuses of that age).

I should add that Focuses are good cars, but when they get to about 10 years old they seem to be massively neglected by their owners. 10 year old Volvos nearly always have FSH and 1 or 2 owners, Equivalent Focuses seem to have about 5 owners and the service book is usualy not even present let alone stamped up!

Volvo also a good shout. I'd one for 3 years and despite being 15 years old it was bomb proof.

Vectors cdti's are good cars I had one before my Scooby

Had it remapped to 175bhp and it was quick for an estate lol

Still got 60mpg as well

Averaged 42

Check the swirl flaps on the inlet though as it can turn out to be an expensive fix if done right

This. Although you will struggle to get a decent 04 for 2k and an 05, well that's a different car entirely.
I have had 1 s40, 2 v40's and now have a v50 (2005) which is, for all intents and purpose a focus estate in drag. The older model s/v40 is a more reliable car (pretty bombproof although vvt pulleys can go, listen for rattle).
Don't bother with diesel unless your mileage warrants it.

Tbh I wish I kept my last v40 instead of buying the v50, which, although fairly old was low mileage and in very good condition from a main dealer, but needed over a grands worth of warranty work done in the first month.
In comparison, the v40 that I paid £800 for needed nothing in the 2 and half years I owned it, and it was the top of range, fully loaded, and fairly rapid T4 CD. Best £800 I ever spent too.

Honda civic, 4 door, circa 2004 model.

You will not believe the room in the back for the kids.

I wouldn't touch a ford focus in comparrison to the honda.

Yeah sorry I meant 2003/2004, had brainfade!

My 2003 V40 was serviced today..... happy to report that despite a good inspection nothing at all was found wanting. 110K and counting. Pretty impressed really!

Im in the same position for my wife who wants an automatic. I think a Honda Civic circa '04 is the way forward for that sort price.

Looked at these for sister in law, suffer from auto box problems.

I thought that was just the Jazz's CVT box that suffered. Did the Civic circa '04 have a CVT auto as well?

I don't think it's a cvt box on the civic, it's the torque converter that is the problem, more common on 99-04 models, don't know if later models suffered as much.
